According to NIST and ECRYPT II, the cryptographic algorithms used in Bitcoin are expected to be strong until at least 2030. (After that, it will not be too difficult to transition to different algorithms.)

I've had success using a program called ProxyCap to route electrum through a proxy. Haven't tried it specifically with digest authentication but it supports several types of proxies so it might work. The website for it is http://www.proxycap.com/index.html
