I have the Mac version of Multibit HD and just want to create a backup file for a USB stick. However, I don't see any way to export a backup file in the wallet.

I went to the Multibit support page and they seem to suggest the backup files are automatically created somewhere on my computer but have no idea where or exactly what they are talking about.

I looked under "tools" in the wallet for an export option but no joy. There is a "Trezor" option but I don't have a Trezor.

I have an older late 2006 Mac but I did just install an update for the Multibit HD wallet.

Reading further in the Multibit HD documentation. It seems they don't like to support storing on removable devices because of failure rates. They prefer cloud backup.

I still have no idea where these "local backups" are, though or how to sync them with cloud based storage.

I just wanted to make my own backup for the time being because setting up a cloud storage can be so much more complicated, especially on an older machine that might not be compatible with the Dropbox or spideroak applications. Instead, my wallet is still not backed up and you never know when these old machines will crash.

What can I do? Thanks for any help.

If you have a seed, thats all you need. You can restore all your addresses when you have your seed.

Otherwise, MultibitHD also stores a wallet file which you can backup. It is in ~/Library/Application Support/MultiBitHD. You should copy zip-backup located inside mbhd-[Blah blah blah] folder. Arguably, it is enough if you just backup mbhd.wallet.aes but you would lose your other information such as your contact if you don't backup contacts.aes and other files.

Thanks, will check my computer for files when home...I'm not really interested in saving contacts and such, though...just the coins.

Not sure what you mean by "seed". I have my password and key words, if that's what you mean. Do you mean Multibit HD is saving a copy of the contents of my wallet online automatically?

Any way I can easily and inexpensively backup the wallet off of my computer is what I'm looking for.

Doesn't mean I won't go the cloud route when I figure it out...I just want a quick way to have a backup off my computer in case it crashes.

Yes. It is given by the client.
Do you mean Multibit HD is saving a copy of the contents of my wallet online automatically?
No, I can't find any evidence of Multibit doing that. It does save a copy on your online storage if you allow it. The uploaded file is encrypted too.

As long as you have the seeds written down correctly, you are fine.

If I lose everything but my wallet words, I can install multibit HD on a new computer and restore my lost wallet with just the wallet words?    (Meaning, "Hey Multibit, I lost everything in a fire and I'm naked but I have my wallet words tattood on my arm.  That's all I need to get my bitcoins back."

Or I have to have a wallet backup file AND the wallet words?

Yeah so long as you have your seed (i.e. wallet words) you can restore all your bitcoins, but you won't have anything else such as any saved addresses, notes, transaction history etc. unless you have the file backup too.

Wallet words for Bitcoins.

Wallet words + back-up files for Bitcoin and any other wallet stored information.
