What recourse do we have if someone hacks into my account at one of the exchanges and drains it. I can see all the transactions they did, and they took every bitcoin I had. I wasn't on the computer at all at that point. And I have been very careful about my password, and I haven't used it at public accounts.

What can I do? I can see their transactions.

The security at these places needs to be improved. This is outrageous that this can happen.

I'm a newbie to this forum, but not a newbie to bitcoins. But I don't know technically how to trace them, nor what I can do besides write to support at the exchange account. I've already done this, and of course they haven't even replied.  What else can I do?

There is not much you can do. A bitcoin transaction cannot be reversed. There are a lot of different ways for someone to get access to your account, sometimes without your password even. Sorry about your loss.

2 core attributes of Bitcoin are working against you:

1) Totally irreversible. No chargebacks.
2) Near-totally anonymous. Anonymous enough that you won't know who it was unless they stupidly have the address they used to steal your coins in a sig on a forum somewhere.

tl;dr You're fucked.

This is why we tell people not to keep their money in exchange accounts. Move your coins (most, at least) into your local wallet, encrypt it, and make over 9000 backups.
