Adolf Hitler. Before being a victim of his own success, Adolf Hitler was an Austrian-born German politician and the leader of the Nazi Party.
Saddam Hussein. Before being a victim of his own success, Saddam Hussein was the fifth President of Iraq.
Osama bin Laden. Before being a victim of his own success, Osama bin Laden was the founder of al-Qaeda, the militant Islamist organization that claimed responsibility for the September 11 attacks on the United States, along with numerous other mass-casualty attacks against civilian and military targets.
Mark Karpeles. Before being a victim of his own success, Mark Karpeles was an ugly fat kid with no prospects.
Bernard Madoff. Before being a victim of his own success, Bernard Madoff was an American stockbroker, investment advisor and financier.
The list goes on. There's no shortage of victims of their own "success", for some values of "success" such as "being incredibly conceited, deceitful, stupid and offensive".
Later update, for which I am well paid:
Bruce Wagner. Before being a victim of his own success, Bruce Wagner was part time television show host in his own head, part time self-styled Bitcoin Jezuz and part time prostitute. And part time convicted felon. And part time.

Is going to fuck up central banksters counts as being a "victim to his own success" now? Well he would have been terribly successful in some areas. Way too successful... President Jackson made the same experience, btw.

Thank you for explaining the joke for the slow kids. If you're goin' to go there, at least offer up a ride. Not light reading for its riders: http://books.google.com/books?id=ZSMQAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA274&dq=%22he+*+of+his+success%22&hl=en&sa=X&ei=GERwUf6sAenxygGenYCwAg&ved=0CDoQ6AEwAjgU Metti Curtli, m. a Sabine of great bravery, who signalized himself in an engagement with the Romans, whom he drove back in disorder, and while he was vaunting of his success, Romulus attacked and repulsed him, on which
