Hi!   I've installed a few mining clients and joined a few pools, but can't seem to earn any shares.

I've tried on:

- BTC Guild
- Bitcoinpool

and i've used these miners:

phoenix
guiminer
poclbm-mod

...

According to Bitcoinpool i've had 84 "requested shares" but only managed to make 1 "submitted" share

When I run poclbm-mod ... i see the "getwork"s process from 0% -> 100%, but once it's finished my "EMP" (empty) tally increases and I move onto the next one.

I know I'm connecting to the server correctly because I did get my *1* submitted share.  But when everyone is getting 30%+ efficiency it's clear mine is too low!

(p.s. i have an AMD 4670 that processes about 33mhash/s)

I'm sorry but your CPU is just to slow.

These days you need a fast GPU in order to participate successfully in pools.
They generate 10x more hash/s then your CPU.

Can you explain what my CPU has to do with it?

My CPU is barely used while i'm mining.

I installed OpenCL and my miners were indeed set to use my GPU device.

Did any of your miners show you that a share got rejected or not, and whether the pool had long polling enabled.

I'm not familiar with bitcoinpool.

I think that it's because your speed doesn't allow you to find a share (proof of work ) before the server gives you the subsequent work.
As i could understand shares are just hashes of the same type of those that are used to sign new blocks but with an higher target (so lower difficulty). Still there is some difficulty to find a share and if you are not fast enough you won't find any share before the server send you the new work. This can become a problem if you can't find any share before the new round starts.
The efficiency you have read about it's referred to good shares/bad shares ratio, infact also when you find a share , sometimes the server can reject it for some reasons.

Only way you're going to get much in the way of shares at ~ 30 Mhash is by joining a small pool.

That's an average of about 1 share every ~ 2.5 minutes.

No matter what you do, 30 Mhash is going to get you about 0.05 BTC per day.

Here you can find how much time in average it will take for you to generate a share
http://www.alloscomp.com/bitcoin/old_calculator.php
The common difficulty for shares is 1 , so put '1' in the difficulty field and 30000 in the speed field then hit calculate.
