Why wouldn't it be possible?  For sure it is.  IMO unlikely so much computing power behind BTC and love for it vs alts.  All of that is changeable though.

Possibilities of bitcoin being replaced by other coin is always there since no one stays forever on the top spot but seeing on the current state of bitcoin i could say its really hard to compete with it and we all know bitcoin is the father of all cryptos and it can stand alone without altcoin but some alts cant stand without bitcoin which means bitcoin is far more superior as of todays.

Same here for now that it is impossible that there is other crypto can be replace BTC. but i just seen the price of ETH just like the price of bitcoin 2013 when the price was increase too fast or jump into $1k value before.. and maybe ethereum can do it. the problem is there is no altcoin are slow adoption.. if they can adopt it just like bitcoin i think can increase their trends fast..

actually would be very difficult for the other coin Overcome bitcoin. bitcoin is the best and biggest coin in the world cryptocurrency. when the bitcoin prices rise, mostly altcoin prices down, whereas if the price of bitcoin stable or down, I guess altcoin prices remain normal. bitcoin become a role model of altcoin, so I guess it was very difficult.

That extreme computing power is the only problem that needs to get overcame, everything else is fine with bitcoins and based on those features, I don't think there will ever be an altcoin which would replace bitcoins. There came many including Monero, ZCash, Etheruem, Ethereum Classic, etc., but none conquered the race and bitcoin is still the best.

they can overcome bitcoin but they need time for this but we don't know when this could be happen or its can not happen. all crypto currencies can overcome bitcoin and each of them have opportunity for this but its really need much of work to do as bitcoin is like a mother of crypto currency so if one altcoin want to replace bitcoin then the dev need to get hard work and smart work to do this.

Isn't the amount of different altcoins actually working against the odds of succeeding?

You have BTC, and then you have many different altcoins which each has some thing.
There is not 1 main competitor; and this diffuses the playing field.

Bitcoin is the largest digital and most powerful currencies also recent statistics said that it has very strong position and day by day its growing up.If you focus on altcoins market almost are failed to fight with bitcoin.Although you are right to say that some altcoins will have value as long as they can do overcome BTC.Right now it's impossible for any altcoins that gain to overcome BTC.However, you can't predict coming future though it's challenging of any altcoins harder too overcome BTC.

yes monero can overcome bitcoin rather than ETH as Monero was briefly considered as the next promising cryptocurrency. Based on CryptoNote(Monero) is known for its privacy and anonymity. These features led to its adoption by few dark net marketplaces. Also both the currency (monero & ETH) are  younger than bitcoin & the bitcoin take so much time to reach at this position so monero can also take time but it can overcome BTC

Its not very likely that any altcoin will overcome Bitcoin. It become brand name. Many people I talk to call all crypto "bitcoin". Not much have heard of ETH, Monero, Doge or any.
My favorite altcoin is Monero, and Bitcoin have almost 80 times more market cap then monero, and 15 more then ETH which is second. Its big difference if you ask me, not easy to get overrun.

I'm fairly confident that none of these alts will overcome bitcoins user base in the near future. Although  monero has the big advantage of anonymity, some has described it as 'anon- coin', there is not a clue that will overcome bitcoin. However, if bitcoin is not able to overcome its problems (segwit, blocksize, transaction fess, etc) many unhappy users will switch somewhere else but I don't believe they will come back to fiat again. As far as it concerns ethereum, imo, has a different purpose because it operates as a platform for smart contracts and distributed applications so is very different to compare with bitcoin.

I would say it possible in some places in the sense that for those who want to remain anonymous and bitcoin with government regulation coming and all this KYCs all over the place, then I see them overtaking bitcoin in no distant time but for the majority of the masses using bitcoin who knows nothing or who have nothing to do in secret or anonymously, then I see alts taking over practically.

ETH? Monero? I hava always thought that if these coins were called to displace the hegemony of bitcoin, that would already have happened given the current problems and weaknesses that bitcoin presents, regardless of whether they are better coins than bitcoin or not.

Well, XMR Monero has a superior technology in terms of anonymity, since todays soft fork RING CT is productive and masks your transaction completely, so i believe XMR Monero has its advantages and will overcome BTC were people do not want others to see what they are doing with their money.

In conclusion to this and to answer the question: XMR Monero will overcome BTC by time  Grin

For Advertisement. PM me to discuss.

They both do not have the capability to overcome bitcoin. Bitcoin is already reached to major parts of the world and some of the bigger companies also have adopted bitcoin for their uses and the marketcap is also increasing much faster than any other coin.

As per my knowledge no other altcoin have that much capabilities to replace bitcoin because bitcoin is not controlled by any developer it is free to all users, but this all altcoin are controlled by the developer and anytime they can manipulate the coin which ever way they want. and more over all altcoin are valued in bitcoin but bitcoin is only valued in fiat currency
