Hey all, Tomorrow I will be going to Xilinx HQ and was told I could get an FPGA (maybe multiples) for free (know a guy). Out of all the ones they have,which would be best/easiest to set up a miner on?

Maybe Spartan-6 XC6SLX150 like they use in the Cairnsmore1? They are expensive though - like $150-$200.
Less logic elements is still good though - it means you can do less per clock (less MH/s), but still good.

i found a neat little chart Virtex-7: $30000 / 1600 MHh/s = $18.75 / MHh/s Spartan-6: $170 / 125 MH/s = $1.36 / MHh/s Kintexes-7: $1200 / 1000 MH/s = $1.2 / MHh/s those are the prices and hashes of the chips that would do well for btc mining i think best of luck sir, happy hunting and have fun while you are there! while you are there, they likely know the right people that can get ASIC chips to us the fastest - you should tell your friend that and let him know how much we are all prepared to dish out for a good product let us know whatcha get!

Spartan-6 XC6SLX150 Good for 250 MH/s Software already written Fairly easy PCB layout (Compared to Virtex) Cheap enough ($150) that they might actually give you a few.

Ended up getting an ML605 because they had a few of those laying around, and I want to learn verilog a bit first before moving to the bigger boards like the 707

Sweet score, that's a pretty expensive kit!
Probably possible to fit a miner in the microboard - the chip (XC6SLX9-2CSG324C) has 9152 Logic Elements/Cells versus the 150K in the common miner chips.

Ended up getting an ML605 because they had a few of those laying around, and I want to learn verilog a bit first before moving to the bigger boards like the 707
The 7xx series boards use the newer 28nm chip versus the ML605 which uses an older 45nm (iirc) chip. But you can't complain with free. ML605 will still get a few hashes. Did they give you software as well?

Indeed a with rolled miner 5 loop it s around 8k lut ... but do not expect more than 50mhs / 64 rounds ... = less than a MH/s
