I'm just curious what the effect is of 24/7 trading on all these wide swings besides other factors such as Mt. Gox lag etc? People in one part of the world go to bed and others are awakening to see the price plummeted or vice versa. Or is this a non issue?

That's the same in real life.
When American and European market is closed for buying and selling EUR and USD, the japanese market opens.
The only difference is that the markets are closed during weekends and holidays.

I like it, trading coins feels exciting and chaotic which keeps it interesting.

All markets are effectively global, 24/7, it's just a matter of your timing.  For example, I am from the US and think that for the most part the US produces the most idiots online, so I generally only "trade" when it is European or Asian "market hours".  More people intelligently playing the market in those areas.  Plus the bigger DDOS attacks and the like have show up mainly during US trading times (as far as I've seen), so I avoid all that mess.  Working out well too, I've got a small slush pool that I keep aside from mining profits and I use that for trading, it's doing quite well after the recent bubble.
