If CoinMarketCap keeps them separate then why are they all lumped into one here ?
I have for years been harping on you all that we need these split up into coins & non-coins.

Ethereum for example is not even a currency.. it's an ICO token app's platform thingy.

Doesn't make any sense when the whole world admits these are VERY different yet they allow posting anything here.
It doesn't have to even exist or have a block-chain or anything.

vs.

Mined* Digital Currencies

Most of the bullshit we see are nothing buy ICO PONZI / PYRAMID schemes.
Some bullshit ICO token thingy with a gimmick of some sort tacked onto it.
For profit.. by noob accounts signing up here with SIG campaigns etc.

We need new sections in a proper order.. this has turned into a vulgar / obscene mess.

Each coin have posted what it is PoV or PoS or whatever. Also what it does and what for was invented. CoinMarketCap will need to add way more to give as much information as are posted here. Good source is ofcourse https://www.coingecko.com     But only way to get as clear picture as possible is just to use all information you can grab and still 24h a day are way to short.

There is a lot and each have own meaning. Not that many coins are to be Internet of money as Bitcoin is.  Most is annoyed with ICOs. ICOs have nothing to do with being Internet of Money, they are there to found a project fast and cheap.  If project dont exist, then you know there will be nothing good with that ICO.  But throwing just all Crypto in one bag is silly.
Yes I agree, this forum could  provide more parts of forum for altcoins and divide them by some attributes.

@bathrobehero
With ETH, mining was tacked on later after the fact when it was getting insulted for being an "ICO"

And it could be simple.. mined and not-mined.

I suggested this long ago and was shot down by the community.
I don't know about anyone else but my interest is gone when i hear the word.. ICO ..yet again.
And most are not a currency.. Ethereum ? Steem ?
What we see 75% of the time is schemes designed to capitalize on the popularity of past released mined digital currencies (posted now within the old section used for currencies)

You all need to listen to me.. I KNOW THINGS !

Hell i jumped over the flag pole on Super Mario Bro's mutha fuckers  Shocked

Coinmarketcap should be taken as what it is. A site that shows us exactly what the site name says. If you want to go down to the technical details then it start a new website called cryptocointechnicalspecs.com and label them as how they should be according to you. Coinmarketcap has been doing a good job in what the coins are worth and what their ranking is according to market cap.

how can you classify them then, would it depend on personal opinions?
all of them are scams or the very best wanna-be in my opinion too

I think the difference between an alt currency and not is whether or not it is used for financial remittance. If the main purpose of the blockchain that the "coin" is on is to be a token/smart contract mechanism, but it has value and traded as such on an exchange or between people, its a currency. Though I don't know if economists have a  bottom line for how many people must accept something as value before its considered a currency, the groups of alt coin communities essentially make up that user base albeit probably scaled down.

If the "coin" has no financial value, and its the blockchain technology behind it that is useful for some purpose, I'd agree that its its own thing. Perhaps a project or a service depending on what it is and for what purpose.

ICOs can be done poorly, and they can be done well. Premines, what any premine is used for, POS/POW, etc etc are all things that an individual can determine whether or not its something they agree with. Determine what is a scam for yourself, as each person has a broader or narrower definition than what we can easily define. Bitcointalk's general definition of a scam coin, is one that has malware built in. Anything beside that is just either an (in)competent developer, a poor/valid vision or direction the developer wants the "coin" to go in, and the launch mechanisms which individuals can decide if they support or not.

@SaltySpitoon. Thank you for the clarification and giving us your definition of what a scam is and how each should be classified as one. It is confusing because one coin has a spectrum of classification. For some it is a total scam while others say it is not. Then there are people in the middle who give it a chance and wait for it to become a scam. The best example of this would be Ethereum. I speculate that Vitalik might leave the whole project and declare it as the property of the community after spending the funds collected in their ICO. I think the Larimers did the same thing with Bitshares.

Barry Silbert cites the 500 shitcoins et al. in the video on https://grayscale.co/ home page at the 3:55 mark where, in no uncertain terms, embraces their existance.

Learnt about the above via today's news: https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/bid-lodged-for-bitcoin-etf-on-nyse-in-a-500-million-ipo/

Coinmarketcap divides them based on mineability. Which is why Ethereum is considered a currency and not an asset/token and why assets on the Ethereum network are, well just that, assets and not currencies.

Where would you draw the line though?

I'd like to see a couple categories based on initial distribution and scheme or non-scheme.

Litecoin does have or need smart-contracts ?
World Coin is not a blogging platform.
Krueger Coin is not a Ledger scheme.
Name Coin is not a market / exchange coin ?
Peer Coin is ... a currency ?

It should be labeled as Currency and ..... other.

Ethereum was not launched and popular and the #2 coin because it was designed to be a currency.
It got where it is because of it's scheme attached to it.
It can NOT be perceived as a currency.. like the countless coins that came before it.
Other wise it would have been ignored. (because we already had far too many as it is)

And i am not talking about how it is now.. i am saying we all should change it !

These Other types are a different type.
Not one of them would have been noticed has they not had some funky snazzy gimmick tacked onto a coin (almost always an ICO)

APP's
Torrents
Blogging
Ledgers
Exchange

People are looking for ways to tack an ICO coin onto a gimmick.
That is not a currency in my books.

Would i consider Dash or Monero a currency ? yes ..an attempt at an improvement.

It is of course a perception matter.
But who's should get priority ?

Would be people really be bothered by "pure" coins separated from schemes ?
If after all that is why they (scheme coins) are launched in the first place then.. there you go
you are standing out of the pack of all the so called pure coins then right ?
Isn't that what they want ?

Problem is the people saying Ethereum will replace Bitcoin are bothered hahahah

I don't get it, why wouldn't people want them broken up a bit ?
It's not like i am saying, hey make a ton of categories.

In case you have not noticed the initial distribution method is tantamount.
ANN topics are usually tagged in the title with [NO ICO] [NO PREMINE]
why ?
Why do they put it right away into the ANN first post ?
BECAUSE PEOPLE DO IN FACT CARE !
Think of it as being the person trying to search for coins.
Wouldn't it be nice to see every premined coin in 1 section then every ICO in 1 section ?
Then the rest (fair mined coins) in the 3rd section.

I don't know how it could look all i know is it's a big hot mess.

What about instead a tagging system with keywords to click on ?
When posting some stuff over at XDA for my Android phone i added tags to my topic such as..
Boot Screen, Boot Logo, Flashable etc

Just trying to offer some perspective on this and some ideas.
I wonder if the user base would vote yes split them up in a poll.

EDIT:

Excuse the higher than normal incoherent rambling all over here.
I am tired and this was a disorganized little "thinking out loud" romp.

FUD first & ask questions later™
