21日凌晨，此前落选但拒绝交权的冈比亚前总统叶海亚·贾梅通过冈比亚国家电视台发表讲话，宣布放弃总统权力，并表示会离开冈比亚。这标志着冈比亚政治危机得以和平解决。
毛里塔尼亚总统阿齐兹、几内亚总统孔戴和西非国家经济共同体（西共体）代表团20日中午抵达冈比亚首都班珠尔展开“最后机会”的斡旋。数小时的调停后，各方达成协议，贾梅宣布放弃总统权力，冈比亚政治危机和平解决。
贾梅宣布，他“决定自愿放弃对冈比亚的统治”。“我们所面临的一切问题都可以和平解决，”贾梅说，“我相信非洲人民可以在通往民主和社会经济发展道路上为自己做出决定。”
