My first wallet was Coinbase so I use them to check the current rate but someone just told me about Coindesk which has a rate about $10 less and that confuses me.

Obviously I'd want to buy at the lower price so how do I know what is right and how do I get the best price?  I also have multibit and electtrum.

Thanks

The only website that you need for this case is: Coinmarketcap. If you click on the Bitcoin price, you will get a big list of Bitcoin markets and the price per Bitcoin on each of those.

Usually when I engage in Bitcoin transactions that require the current USD exchange rate, I use the one found on: http://preev.com/

Obviously I'd want to buy at the lower price so how do I know what is right and how do I get the best price?  I also have multibit and electtrum.
That depends on the region that you are located in.

I like tradingview.com (which offers charts for many bitcoin markets) because you can draw all kinds of patterns and learn a bit about trading too.

If you just want fast info, try either bitcoinaverage.com or preev.com

The former averages all exchanges by volume, and has a listing of prices on them, which can be helpful if you are looking to buy some Bitcoin and need to check the rates across different exchanges.

Also, preev is just the fastest loading, most lightweight one imo. Easy to quickly check and close if you need that too.

No longer active on bitcointalk, however, you can still reach me via PMs if needed.

I use https://markets.blockchain.info/ where I find almost all exchanges' prices available, sometimes there are bugs due to which we can't see the exact price written there when we click on any exchange's name, but the charts are live and we can still see the actual prices there. But as everyone else said, Preev is still the best if you want an average price based on all exchanges.

As Lauda said, you can use Coinmarketcap where you can see list of 100 bitcoin markets and it's always updated. I don't think that you can find something better.
And it's not important which wallet you are using.

Is www.coindesk.com/price/ a good source?

You can go into coinmarketcap and see the list of different price sources:
https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/bitcoin/#markets

My fav as mentioned a few times is http://preev.com/

Given its so simple to use and it averages out the price.

Wusolini is right.

BitcoinWisdom has the most accurate overall price of Bitcoin. They use the price from "Bitstamp" https://www.bitstamp.net/.

Check with you merchant and see what exchange they are getting the price from to get an accurate figure.

If you have an Android phone than best 2 options are Preev and Bitcoinpricelive Apps. I use only these two and I am very happy and never miss any price movement, up or down wherever I am. When I am at home I check many websites already mentioned here, but my favorite is always Preev.com

Preev is the most popular website to see the current Bitcoin exchange rate. I also generally use it.

Each and every exchange have their own price and the correct current price of btc no one can tell as the price fluctuates so fast that you will surely get different price on all big exchanges as the trading will be going according to it.

I agree with the others that mentioned Bitcoinwisdom with Bitstamp information. It tends to be quite accurate. I also like to use Preev sometimes do check the price of different amounts of bitcoin but it tends to be less accurate sometimes.
