AMD XFX 7970 DD not working correctly

Hi,

i got an AMD 7970 which does seem to be broken of some kind.

It powers on, gets detected on some systems, on others it does not.

If detected and drivers are installed it runs for about 4 mins (load does seem to change this) and then the system blue screens with "Thread stuck in device driver"

i have tried multiple driver versions (15.12,16.3.2,16.12.2) and used Win7 x64 and win8.1 x64 (also fresh installs tested)

Does anybody have a clue what might be wrong with the card, and if it might be possible to fix it?

Did you put it inside the slot directly? Tried with a different PSU?

Sounds like you might need to put it inside your oven and cook it.

tried it directly in the x16 slots and via (multiple) risers, so i have ruled out the risers

tested with a 600W psu and a 1050W psu (i know overkill ), so i have ruled out the psu

i unfortunately dont have an oven here, so this is my last resort as i can only do it at my parents house (im a poor student)

thanks for suggesting the oven trick, havent thought of that yet

Sounds like you might need to put it inside your oven and cook it.

tried it directly in the x16 slots and via (multiple) risers, so i have ruled out the risers

tested with a 600W psu and a 1050W psu (i know overkill ), so i have ruled out the psu

i unfortunately dont have an oven here, so this is my last resort as i can only do it at my parents house (im a poor student)

DO you have any other GPUs to test with your PC? Maybe its your motherboard, cpu, some other hardware, etc.

Where did you get the GPU? Was it working previously.

Its common for the solder to break due to the heavy heatsinks, sometimes cooking it in an oven gets it working again. Or take it apart and see if any capacitors are burnt or any other burnt parts.

yes the mobo and the other parts are working fine, they run a 7870 and a GTX 1060 rig normally

i got the gpu off ebay-kleinanzeigen, the seller sold it as working, but obviously it ist not. Unfortunately i have not payed with Paypal so im stuck with this card

i have not smelled burned parts when the card was running, so i will save this up for later, too

i noticed the seller had to be some kind of smoker, might it be possible that this is related to smoke particles in/on the card?

i have isopropanol here to clean it if neccessary

If you smell smoke, most likely something burnt inside the GPU.

Since you bought it on eBay, file a dispute and get your money back. Not worth the headache trying to fix it.

i didnt smell smoke, it has to be either weed or some kind of vaping stuff, im not sure

i havent bought it off ebay, its ebay-kleinanzeigen, just like a local inseration in a newspaper or something, ebay doesnt offer support there as they do on their main site

i will file a report at my local police station, but thats all i can do sadly

Haha, I happen to have one XFX 7970 DD (fx-797a-tdf v6.0) with same symptoms. If it gets detected in bios it works like charm for weeks, thing is that not every motherboard/ pcie slot sees it. Tried different bioses for gpu but didn't help, to get detected so that I can flash bios I had to reset cmos on that motherboard, after that it did find gpu but only on that very first boot after cmos reset. Weird.

I would have sold it already but don't want to start fighting with some angry buyer. So it has been mining zec on one home server that is always on, after strapcopy it does something like 260 sol/s (elpida).

Another longshot do is to redo the thermal compound. There are plenty of videos on how to do this.

The thermal compound I like best is Antec's formula 7.

And try with different risers/ without riser. I got it working on one P67 sabertooth motherboard but only with ribbon riser, not detected without riser on that rig.

I still believe there is a chance to get it working, if everything else fails try that famous old oventrick.

If you bought it second hand for cash and the guy ripped you off pretty much nothing you can do. Try calling him and maybe you'll get your money back or he'll exchange it for another GPU.

In my area Police never get involved in these situations because its always hearsay. The seller would say that you broke it.

Most people are honest from the classifieds, especially in regards to computer equipment but there is always like a 5% chance of getting ripped off. Still better than buying retail however.

on another note i have thought about setting up some ubuntu desktop usb stick and trying to see which error i get there, might be worth a try?

yes, here its also very unlikely i get my money back, police does more here it seems, i also have my roommate who can confirm it didnt work on the first try and i didnt drop it or something

but well, its potentially too much hassle to go through with a hearing and stuff (if the seller objects) for lousy 60€
