It's been done, and was rejected from the store.

Just about any type of BTC app you could possible want has been made for android and jailbroken apple devices (for the fact that communist apple does not allow btc apps in their market)

Not particularly worth your time to code yet another.

What did this rejected "bitcoin app" do exactly?

Because if Apple rejects an app, all hope is far from lost because a web-app can always take the place of a native app. An online connection is always required for a web app, but still, in this case you need an internet connection to do anything anyways.

I'm currently working on mobile apps related to bitcoin, so I'm definitely investigating the bitcoin/apple issue.

The author open sourced the project.  He provides instructions for pulling it into XCode and building it yourself:

https://github.com/udibr/bitcoin/

It was rejected, because apparently Apple states you cannot have apps that use "alternative currencies".  Unfortunately, that's not in the TOS anywhere (I'm a dev).  However, it's the App Store.

There are several apps on Cydia if you Jailbreak.  The author said he wasn't going to bother putting it in Cydia.

I'm sure as mentioned above that a fully functional web-app would be the way forward. Most smartphones have a pretty powerful browser and always on connections to make it viable.

There are currently 2 apps on the iOS App Store that have to do with Bitcoin. One released June 2nd titled "Bitcoin App" which is charging $3.99 and the other released June 8th titled "iBTC" which is free. Maybe they lifted the restriction as the apps were released not too long ago.

Once the Mango updates comes out we'll have support for sockets, which I believe would be a requirement for running any Bitcoin client (the whole p2p part) Smiley
IIRC the SDK is already there so I might check if I could port the java client to C# already.

Awesome.  If I had any decent amount of BTC, I would send some your way! But alas, I don't even have 1/10 of 1BTC.  Maybe someday.

Both apps just provide information on exchange rates.  Neither allows you access to your wallet, or the ability to conduct transactions.
