my seasonic platinum power supply charred and broken, just share my experience

some day ago i got a problem in my zcash rig, only 1vga showing from total 4vga, can't showing my 3vga, trying to check anything, any cable its woking perfect, then im trying to put my vga directly on motherboard not using pcie riser, and the vga normally working perfect.
so im check the power supply and i found this

1 of my pcie (sata pin connector) get charred and brokken after i force to take the cable, and the cable is burned out.
im still happy other pin stil working perfect.

for all miner i recomendation some instruction :
1. dont use 1 pin cable for supply more than 2 sata pcie riser
2. don't use low power supply to supply pcie riser, even if you use other big power supply to give power vga.

Dosent have to do with PSUs...he clearly overloaded his Molex line with 3 or 4 riser cards.

First thought as well. I only ever put 2 cards per SATA/Molex cable.

For a multi card rig, the safest is one card one, one separate molex power feed from the power supply.

I only double up the HDD and one GPU.

Interesting fact the reseller said that the units have been all removed from market for no reason given.

He just payed back the money..no new units available atm. something must be gone completely wrong at Seasonic.

Very simple they insist on using 18 gauge wire.

I have melted 4 or 5 jacks on seasonic psus.

It is not about overloading as I melted the pcie jacks pulling 190 watts.

I don't use seasonic for mining anymore.

I like evga p2.

Rosewill quark is good.

Some corsair are good.
I have two prime titanium psu a 750 and a 850.

they are good units but 24/7/365 run times  are hard on 18 gauge cables  and they insist on staying with 18 guage

I have two prime titanium psu a 750 and a 850.

Same but the psu still runs fine. Original 2013 Jupiter psu was lazy ran with KNC y adapter
And ran fine 1.5 years. Blew out 2nd y adapter at the last and decided to finally check the
Connections at the psu end. All kind melted lol. Got
4 out of 6 ports back and ordered pcie cables seasonic (FYI such are less then 8 bucks each at seasonic so got 4. So will use it on a regular desktop build. You maybe can do that, they are not too bad and can be 'buffed up/cleaned out some.

Now use server dual psu's with dual backplate protection 15 awg wire direct plug to Titans. No issues now

I review power supplies. Most run 18 AWG wire on the peripheral cables, regardless of OEM... never assume they'll handle much power.

The seasonic's burn on the pcie jacks a lot.

This particular  thread he burned a sata jack.

But trust me  many pcie jack burn on the seasonic  and if I am right they are 18ga not 16ga.

I just got a rosewill titanium from newegg yesterday  the 1500 watt

I got it at 250 usd (sale and coupon) it will run my pandaminer.

That would be me. I've got two of those Rosewills - the review unit will be pushing a 6 card rig as soon as I figure out what I'm doing for a motherboard.

Seasonic has been 18 AWG on all cables for a while now. I'm trying to gently prod them into upgrading those PCIe cables. They're amazing PSUs, but not what I run in the dedicated mining rigs because they're not really intended or built for it. That said, I have a Prime Titanium 750W running the office rig, and it does mine. It uses two single connector cables to push one downvolted 290X to get around the wire gauge issues. I've also got a Seasonic 1050W mining a three card machine temporarily until I un-lazy myself and get that Rosewill in there. Again, using as many connections between the PSU and GPUs as possible.

I actually can't remember the last time I saw peripheral cables bigger than 18 AWG, actually. Even my Super Flower 1600s use 18. That said, I usually run two risers per cable and have never had an issue provided I use them with cards that don't take a lot of slot power. For cards that do pull a lot from the slot, I get the risers with actual PCIe power connectors on them. You don't want to pull 90W out of one Molex for 24/7 use.

First thought as well. I only ever put 2 cards per SATA/Molex cable.

same opinion here, sata connection overloaded with cards...2 is still somewhat safe, if you could do it with 1 card per sata cable the better.

same thing with my seasonic.. i ended up burning out 4 pci-e sockets with a s5..
i had one port per socket.. i really dont think any were overloaded.
sockets on the psu are just a bad design.. no matter if you run 18g or 16g or even 14g wire, the sockets can still fail.

I was running a Corsair 1200i and an EVGA 1200 P2 with the y adapters on my titan.  I have a first batch titan.  all dies still good and i'm running original 2.0 version software.  Two cubes on each power supply.

about 6 months ago, The titan would just power off.  I had the corsair as the primary and the evga as the secondary.  this happened a couple times, it would run fine for a day, i'd come home from work and it be shut off.  So i made the evga the primary and the corsair the secondary.  Just the cubes connected to the corsair would shut off.  I'm thinking my power supply is going bad.   I swap it out with another evga 1200 p2 i had on my spare parts shelf and it's been fine since.

a couple months ago, i'm reconfiguring a few miners, and i'm pulling spare cables from power supplies, and one of the pcie cables from the corsair is stuck... it was burnt and crispy in the socket.
