How to buy Bitcoin on Poloniex

Hey all,

I am reasonable new to Bitcoin and Eth etc and have set up a Poloniex account to keep all my currencies in. Now i only have about $17 worth of Bitcoin at present but i want to purchase about £30 in Bitcoin and add it to my $17 already in my Poloniex wallet. Please can someone help in how i do this using my debit card as when i try to deposit it says i need to purchase USDT and gives me the long address to deposit it too.

Poloniex is an exchange that helps you buy and sell crypto currencies and using fiat is impossible so you should use an exchange to buy using your credit card and then send the funds to your poloniex wallet which I don't recommend by the way.
You probably don't have much but Its never suggested to do that , online exchange don't give you control over your private keys so If It happens and the exchange goes down (hack , ddos .. anything) , you won't be able to access your funds anymore.
You didn't mention the country you live in so I will suggest buying from virwox.com as they don't ask for ID verification's or anything but the fees are definitely high.

I would go with a Desktop wallet to store my coins , something like Electrum[1] should do the job. For buying bitcoins , being from the UK have some benefits when It comes to exchanges so I suggest using Coinbase.com or Bitstamp .

you can buy bitcoin in poloniex use USDT, but if you want buy bitcoin and you can't deposit USDT use youre debitcard
alternative buy bitcoin, you can buy another bitcoin user(post in curency exchange) or you can buy in localbitcoins.com

Tether- only sole way to add fiat to poloniex , to Tether balance you can add fund via wire transfer.

using electrum is a good option for the OP and maybe the other desktop wallet that i can suggest is multibit but don't use coinbase as they are not good at least its not good for me. i think you can trying to visit bitstamp or btc-e as they can trade bitcoin pair usd and they can withdraw into your bank account but of course the fee is high.

This is very fatal mistake that you are mistaking for Memo ID with 2FA Account
Try contacting Poloniex Support

back to OP, if you can buy bitcoin use fiat money in poloniex, only support USDT in there, you can deposit in tether.to use youre debit card
after you have USDT balance you can deposit in poloniex, and then buy bitcoin

I think its very small amount and they will not send but for detailed answer of this question please go to your bank and ask them how much they will cut from this amount because no one can give you any reply about this here on this forum

I'm a complete beginner, I'm reading my 2nd book on cryptos but I don't know even the basics of purchasing and securely storing. I am in the process of opening a poloniex account, I was going to use coinbase but a) they couldn't even do a debit transaction for me, and b) they've been hacked once or twice already. So I thought I'd try poloniex, then keep a local wallet on my desktop and backed up on a couple of usb memory sticks. You sound like you know how things work well enough to give me some good advice.
If you have the time I would appreciate very much if you would tell me what to study up on. This page includes advise to use Tether and Electrum. Do you agree with that?
I live in the US and would use a debit card or bank wire xfer to depost funds somewhere that I can buy Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin for starters. I have a few more I'm researching but I want to buy before prices rocket up again.

I think you can go to localbitcoin to buy bitcoin first because I don't know how to buy bitcoin using the credit card in the poloniex and I don't have any experiences. after you buy bitcoin in localbitcoin, you ask the seller to send the bitcoin to your bitcoin wallet address that you have in your account in poloniex. and if the amount of bitcoin arrives in your wallet, then you can buy sell the bitcoin to get USDT. it is better if you can find your friend which has the same city in your country so you can ask him/her to sell him/her bitcoin to you.

then you need to send a ticket to poloniex system support so your problem can be solved. the mistake you did is you use the wrong memo address which is a list of your stellar poloniex wallet. please remember, for the next time, when you want to send stellar, make sure that you double check the address and the memo.
