I simply do not have time to touch this, but I am putting the idea out there if someone wants to jump on it.  I speak as a former US Navy officer that toured from 1990-1996.  I have been on leave and on tour in, just to name a few, Japan, Afghanistan, most of Europe, Iraq/Kuwait and several other ports.  This was before the Euro was really around or very popular and since the idea of the Euro has diminished.

One of the biggest points of confusion when in port or on leave is the currency.  I believe I remember spending 10,000 Yen or more for a pack of cigarettes, some unknown amount of German currency, French currency and Italian currency to buy whatever.  Honestly, most of my leave time was spent drinking, which compounds the issue because once you are a little tipsy, the conversions get even crazier to track.  Several sailors get ripped off left and right and others lose track of their spending quickly.

I have since traveled a great deal and most of the time I get around these mass conversions by booking almost everything in advance online and spending very little money cash out of hand.

I suggest a side token of Bitcoin that military and other travelers can use.  This is a huge project, not because of development, but because it will need a great deal of integration in several different countries.  If this works and gets even a little integration, then it may help get cryptos into some countries more quickly.  Yes, it is another avenue of money laundering, but so is everything these days.  I suggest a colored coin versus a separate alt coin because there needs to be a way to ensure a semi-controlled value.  A Navy sailor that converts their last ten paychecks into the coin and then finds that the value dropped off could be stranded or worse.  The same could be true of anyone out of the country.  Imagine the Navy sailor converting to X coin, losing everything and then trying to figure how to feed their family 4,000 miles away.  A side token can lose value too, but there are more ways to ensure that the original BTC value that enters the side token's chain is preserved.

I would love to do this, but anyone looking at my post history will see that I currently have more than six projects in the works and that is just the list spoken about here.  As I said, dev'ing the token is pretty easy, but getting it used in X number of foreign countries is a big bill to pay.  Any thoughts would be appreciated, I am keeping this thread NOT self-moderated so that if someone takes the idea and runs they can do what they wish here.

What's the argument against using bitcoin for this use case?

honestly, none. for whatever reason it simply did not occur to me.  even back in the 90's, i had internet access on the ship 90% of the time, so btc would have worked.  i was hoping for something that had a value closer to $1 USD per coin.  In fact, i would like to see a token accomplish that simple thing.  people get very confused trying to convert BTC to USD and back.  this $1000 per coin price range has made it easier, but that is a big hurdle for people as far as starting to use BTC everyday.

I am curious to see how prices in a store would be posted once BTC is all over.  gallon of milk......0.004 BTC on a price tag, what if the value changes a great deal.  there is a lot of work to be done.

I agree with the person asking, "why not Bitcoin"

However, your wish is already granted. It's called Tether. http://Tether.to

You just need to convince the barkeep and escorts to accept it. You would have better luck convincing them to accept Bitcoin.

That's just, like, my opinion, man.

Okay. The old man told me to take any rug in the house.

i never looked closely at tether.  i agree with everyone here.  i think that bitcoin or whatever crypto will work well for someone from the USA and abroad soon.  just for the fact that it is more likely that cryptos will take a strong local hold in the european arena first.  in the navy, you could use crypto through the european area and simply exchange to fiat before returning to a more restrictive USA.  I will take another look at tether though.  when new alt coins and services erupt at hundreds per day, it is hard to fully examine each one
