I had a American Express credit card which I cancelled. It is expired now and AmEx asked me to send the card back.
What happens when I will not send back the card? Are there surcharges?

The process for cancelling a credit card account is to cut the card in half and send it back to the credit card company (provided you have paid the balance owing).  If you don't send the card in, they may not close the account which could affect your credit limit when applying for credit cards or loans in the future.
