Bitstamp broke the record of raising crowd funds of a millions just recently.
Are they the top exchange now that China's going to have the government are going to start clawing back for years of not getting those fees that they missed collecting for all those years of their operations being regulated free?
This makes it a level playing field now that China has their government officials calling the shots for the exchanges running in their country. Grin

Coinbase's GDAG exchange has to be one of the largest.

https://www.gdax.com/

And how are we valuing these exchanges? By volume of trades? By amount of currency that trades on the exchange? By assets on their books? By market capitalization?

This is true, some of the new exchanger since they are new in this industry, they will do everything to invite the community to trade in their exchange,  because that's the main purpose of their business. And most of it they will free coins, and the lowest percentage fee for the transaction.

In here, I'm using my trustworthy local exchanges because I have made a deal with them few times and never had a problem with them. Ever tried C-Cex or Poloniex? (Just guessing  Cheesy). New exchanges is coming up currently, so you can try out those sites if necessary.

i have seen new exchanger doing expantion in many places to promote their sites and they can get more member. from time to time while they doing this, they are going to increase the percentage of the fee for every transaction and they give the reason is for maintain the website. maybe this is good exchanger by increase the fee but before they doing this, i think they should make a vote for their member so they know what their members want.

i think poloniex can be worth of bitcoin exchange as the other exchanger that we know.

I liek Kraken, it was never hacked just few ddos here and there, it has no ID requirement, sepa as unbelievable fast for me, same day some time

maybe they can do a better leverage for trading like 10x instead of only 5x, but i'm not too much on trading so i don't care for that

Bitstamp broke the record of raising crowd funds of a millions just recently.
Are they the top exchange now

top exchange based on what?
the amount of money they have or the amount they have earned? or the features they offer and how safe they are!
I'd say poloniex is the biggest one in the first criteria based on how much they have and how much they earn.
and as for safety and features go all the exchanges are unsafe and highly risky.

Quote
that China's going to have the government are going to start clawing back for years of not getting those fees that they missed collecting for all those years of their operations being regulated free?

they have been making money when they had 0 fees through lending and margin trading and possibly some other shady things.
now they can no longer offer margin so they have 0.2% fee and still do shady things and make money. not much will ever change.

Quote
This makes it a level playing field now that China has their government officials calling the shots for the exchanges running in their country. Grin

it was always level playing field. those volumes that Chinese exchanges reported were open to interpretation. you could say they are controlling bitcoin and panic or you could stop thinking about China all the time and start thinking realistic and see nothing has changed.

If you wished to buy things in online using bitcoin. Please use the purse.io wallet to buy things in amazon and you could able to redeem the promotion offer of 15% percent flat discount on every purchase from it.  If you wish to exchange into fiat, please go ahead with Coinbase, polenix or localbitcoins. All three are fine till date. Do not influence paypal mode of exchange to avoid the other transaction mode in btc.

if altcoin exchanger poloniex is the best exchanger, the best volume transaction, so in there can easy to take profit
but not bitcoin exchanger pair fiat money, altcoin only support USDT for payment, not support another payment procesor and can't withdraw to bank account

This is true, some of the new exchanger since they are new in this industry, they will do everything to invite the community to trade in their exchange,  because that's the main purpose of their business. And most of it they will free coins, and the lowest percentage fee for the transaction.

A Multisig Example
You hold 100 Lykke coins (LKK) in your wallet. You want to exchange for euros on the Lykke platform. You hold the private key to your coins in your wallet (it’s the 12 words you wrote down when you originally set up your wallet).
At the same time, the Lykke exchange holds a second private key that is tied to your Lykke coins.
The same is true for your counterparty, who wants to trade Euros for Lykke coins. All coins on the Lykke exchange have two keys: one for the owner, and one for the exchange.
The coins exist right now on the Bitcoin blockchain. The goal of this transaction is to transfer the coins from one bitcoin address to another.
Now, the trade requires four keys: one from each owner, and one key from the exchange for each token. When all four trades are present, the bitcoin blockchain accepts the trade.
It takes just a few minutes to settle, and generally around 30 to 60 minutes for a full confirmation.
The Refund Contract
What happens if something bad happens to the exchange? For example, hackers get the password and are able to discover a bunch of private keys. Two things:
1. The hackers can’t move any coins, as they require you to agree as part of the multisig transaction. So the private keys are useless to the hackers.
2. If the hackers somehow take the exchange down, destroy the keys, or hold them for ransom, a special refund contract unwinds the trade. Let’s see how that works. Assume the Lykke keys are gone:
First, you can’t trade. Your assets are stuck in your Lykke wallet. Since you registered with your email address, you will get a notice saying Lykke’s private keys have been compromised.
A special contract on the blockchain checks for the private keys every day. If it sees the keys, it resets. If it doesn’t see the keys, it keeps checking for 30 days. If, after 30 days, it still doesn’t see the keys, it automatically issues a refund. In your Lykke wallet, there’s a place in the settings page where you can give a bitcoin refund address. You can do that now, or you can wait and do it if you ever need to (we hope you never do). The refund sends all your bitcoins to that address, which you have the sole private key to — this address is off the exchange.
At the moment, this only works for bitcoins. We will soon announce the refund feature for all colored coins as well.

You have to be carefull with exchanging your bitcoin for paypal. There are lot of people who just love to scam using paypal. Once they sent you the money they initiate a dispute, or a chargeback with the credit card. Sending as personnal payment (family and friend) doesn't matter as in this case they fill a complaint for unautorized transaction. Not worth the risk. I deal with bitcoin and paypal only with friend that i know since long time. You can take a look at Coinbank, you can withdraw to paypal, but you need to your coinbank account verified of course, and paypal may hold the funds during 21 days.

I was not aware of this crowdfunding, but if it's in the range of millions, will certainly help the exchange to progress. These times may be good times for bitstamp to grow, as users are wary of using other exchanges, such as bitfinex, which was hacked in the last year, or coinbase, which has gone through legal issues recently.

Same in here, I have been using local exchange from the first time I knew bitcoin until now.
I don't trust any exchange, seems so risky to put huge amount of bitcoin in one place in my opinion.
If we're talking about the best exchanges, what about the one who have the biggest trading volume in every month or year, seems China exchange leading the way, not so sure.

Maybe bitstamp has set the best record after PBOC of China has investigated the Chinese Exchangers for making hoax volumes and market manipulation. But though bitstamp has a good record I would still use cryptopia, C-cex and Yobit. There is no deep reasons for me to state this exchangers it is just that I am at home and comfortable using these sites.

I think exchanges like c-cex, cryptopia and yobit are more appropriate for altcoins, and I would only advise to trade altcoins that are not available in more reliable exchanges, such as poloniex and bittrex. For the purpose of btc/fiat trading, maybe bitstamp is a good choice, but I have not yet used it. Can anyone using this exchange comment on this?
