I have seen people get to it as low as 852. So it is totally random and nothing to do with the activity and how often you use the forums.
It is sort of like a lottery draw after you get past 775 I believe.

Why do some people have legendary status? How did they acquire such a status? Link anyone?

Legendary:   Activity: the Legendary membergroup has no universal activity requirement.
You are guaranteed to become Legendary somewhere between 775 and 1030 activity,
but the exact point in this range at which you become Legendary is random per user.
Gets 5 gold coins under his name of which the last is half dark blue.

I think they should stretch this rankings a bit more, since i dont really feel like a Legendary here.  Or add some more ranks or just set higher activity to reach them.    2000 for Legendary would be way better.

First of all, I would like to congratulate you on your rank promotion. It is long road to Legendary rank for me, for now i can only look at other  Legendary ranks and imagine how will it be when i get it XD . But tell me this. How is it possible that you got your on 952 and that other dude got it after 1100 or so? Activity points that you need for next rank are same for all, right ?

You will get Legendary rank randomly somewhere between 775 and 1030 activity.
