I am wondering what is the general consensus on these 4 options of RX series cards? The 8GB variants have faster memory than the 4GB variants but also cost more

What is considered the sweet spot of mining performance vs. cost of investment, and than resale value? I am thinking of getting one and this is all something to consider. That plus which cards have the most pre made bios mods available for them which is also a lottery factory on what type of memory these have.

From what I can observe it seems like the 470 Nitro+ 4GB variant may be the cheapest bet that comes with bios mods already. The market may be flooded with these being resold in due time as well thanks to the mining popularity so it might not resell very easily?

So I am learning about the potential memory types that some cards come with. So far if I am right Samsung > Hynix > Elpedia? I am not sure what the memory strap means. I am assuming that the memory based ROM's are the pro ETH miners. Not sure what is the best for XMR, Pascal coin assuming it survives, or ZEC?

If you know how to do custom memory mods then hynix is as good as samsung.

The rumours said that the most advanced users can beat 800 H/s (CryptoNight - Monero) from single hynix graphic card.

I do not know if CryptoNight is a memory intensive or core intensive script. If memory than it's more likely only the 8GB 480's can hit that with a chance for the Nitro+ 8GB 470 which appears to be the only RX 470 with the 8 GB/s memory

Im asking myself the same questions you are  Cheesy

Price differences in our country are huge, i can get a rx 470 below 200 euros, while rx 480 8 gigs costs 300+.
The problem is the resale value, those 470's are not realy valued among gamers and its gonna be hard to sell, also because of the fact so many miners will be selling them ( if, that is ).
Im going for new stuff because of the warranty of course, but im pretty sure that moding the bios will void it.

I have a few miner friends that had a lot of problems with MSI cards, a lot of failures plus one literally caught on fire!

My opinion is simple:

-If you care only about mining, go with RX 470 4 GB.

-If you care about re-selling as well, go with RX 480 8 GB.

Both 470 and 480 have, and will have good resale value in the future. In my opinion, if RX 470 nitro is the cheapest go with that. If price difference in your country between RX470 and RX 480 is no that high go for 480 then. About memory, 8gb modules do have a bit higher seed

My opninion that ROI of RX 470 4G is/will be the minimal. They are less effective in mining(up to 10%) than rx 480 but cost 25+% less.

Well. The Nitro+ 4GB is the cheapest right now and there are lots of bios mods for it already

There is a sale for the RX 480 PowerColor Red Devil which has the 6+1 power phases which gives the chance to maintain the same core clocks on a lower voltage/power cap, and it is triple fans which means it can run cooler for mining. But there are not a lot on here with this card. Also the power phases on that one are 25 watts each instead of 22.5 watts, so unless the power settings in AMD are as simple as NVidia as I am used to 1070's right now this might force the card to guzzle power?

This makes me feel more comfortable going with the cheap RX 470 just so I can learn how AMD cards OC without putting in much, than I can just dedicate it to mining and keeping ETH or XMR while my 1070's work on NiceHash BTC earnings

Reselling the card is important to me. Electric is not cheap by me. I absolutely need efficiency during the summer time or else I may as well not mine between electric, heat, and more electric to run an AC for the GPU heat. I will most likely have to sell before summer 2018 and either get the newest and hopefully more efficient cards or retire from mining, while keeping 1 GTX 1070 for my main computer

If you mean the Saphire Nitro+ 8gb RX 470, with the 8 GB/s memory? That one is Samsung. The only 470 with 480 memory speeds

Sapphire Nitro+ with 4gb also have samsung memory and it's really great card. I've personally bought 4 of them and I just can't say anything about about any of them.

It's lottery

You could have Hynix or Elpedia memory on those instead. I already know that the Elpedia 29 MH eth rom is not any more power efficient than the default whereas people are modding reference 480's to hit 31 with less power

Best I can do is wait and see when the newest reviews from a carrier disclose what type of memory someone got and I have a chance of getting in on that batch
