I used to mine BTC on Eligius, and it worked OK, but anymore I mine BTC on bitparking 'cuz it lets me pick up merged-mining rewards for 3 different altcoins (vs Eligius' 1 altcoin).

When I mine TRC or PPC, I do it solo.

I have 2 Avalons running on Ozcoin right now.  I ran them against an eloipool private pool for a little while.  Right now I'm experimenting with eloipool for a public pool.  If I set up a new public pool would I be able to attract enough people to keep the site and service running?

I wasn't sure if 2 avalons (1 from batch 2 and 1 from batch 3) would be worth solo mining.  So far I've been GPU mining so naturally I went to a pool.  I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't know how to solo mine.  I'd very much like to try to solo mine if it seems like that would yield a higher payout.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to get started w solo mining?

When that unit from batch 3 will be delivered difficulty could be really high, right now with a single Avalon it should take around one week or a little more for a block.

But given variance, it could take even longer, so maybe with a single Avalon it is better to be mining in a pool.

Anyway, here they are two recipes to solo mining:

Anyone have experience with the two different private/solo pool software (eloipool, generalfault/slushpool)?

It seems like eloipool is preferred as that was given by jgarzik first as a walkthrough.

I went ahead and installed both on my bitcoind node, and to be honest I like that slush's pool software has a webpage with the current total hashrate/etc.  I didn't look very hard, but it doesn't look like there is much in the way of reporting for eloipool out of the box.

Anyone with an Avalon actually using one of these?  Are most folks just hitting up the major pools?

I'm launching my own pool soon, I'm not sure if it will be private (small group) or public.

Mining on BTC Guild is against my religion. I like pool.itzod.ru No fees, only donations. But sometimes high variance. sometimes I mine on ozcoin as well. LTC I mine on ozcoin exclusively
