I have an older MacBook with Bitcoin-Qt. I sent my few BTC from there to my email address on Coinbase. They never came there. My Bitcoin-Qt says unconfirmed but my balance is now 0. How do I recover from this and get my BTC back?

How much time did you wait ? Sometime on Bitcoin network, there's some stuck transaction. 3 month ago, one of my transaction took three days to confirm.

It's been 3 1/2 weeks. I have now canceled my Coinbase account. I just need to find my missing BTC now.

Your description doesn't make sense.  I don't think you've described your situation properly.

You state that you sent your few bitcoins FROM MacBook with Bitcoin-Qt TO your email address on Coinbase?

This is not possible.  Bitcoin-QT will not accept an email address as a destination for bitcoins.  It will tell you that it is an invalid address.

If you are sending FROM Bitcoin-QT, then you have to use a Bitcoin Address.

If you were sending to a Coinbase address, then either:

  • The transaction is confirmed, and Coinbase has the bitcoins.  In this case you will have to contact Coinbase and convince them to give you access to the bitcoins.

OR

  • The transaction is unconfirmed.  In this case you can tell Bitcoin-QT to abandon the transaction so you can send a new one wherever you like.

OR

  • You accidentally used the wrong bitcoin address and sent the bitcoins somewhere that is NOT Coinbase, and that transaction has confirmed.  In this case the only way to get the bitcoins back is to figure out who you actually sent them to and convince them to send the bitcoins back to you.

If you provide the bitcoin transaction ID from your Bitcoin-QT, then it might be possible to give you more information about what has happened, and what your options are.

I did send it to my personal email address. It has a long BTC code with it as well. The transaction ID is almost twice as long. I'm cautious about giving out a transaction ID because I don't want them stolen. I just want to cancel the send so my BTC are back.

Again, Bitcoin cannot be sent to email addresses. That is simply not how Bitcoin works. You should have gotten a ~30 character Bitcoin address beginning with a '1'. The transaction ID should be 64 characters. Both address and txid are safe to post publicly, no one can steal the Bitcoin just by knowing the transaction id or knowing the details of a transaction.

Bitcoin transactions are irreversible, you cannot cancel a transaction and send the Bitcoin back to the sender.

I can't find the transaction in any block explorer or on my own node. Given that it has been several weeks, it is safe to assume that the transaction has been dropped by the network and thus the Bitcoin has "returned" to your wallet. To actually be able to spend, you need to clear the unconfirmed transaction from your wallet. Right click the transaction in the transactions list and choose "Abandon transaction". If that option is not available, then you will have to start Bitcoin Core with the -zapwallettxes command line option.

I generally use Coinbase.com, GDAX.com, or localbitcoins.com

I have now canceled my Coinbase account.

Why did you do that?
