Average time between blocks is 10 minutes but I've known it to take over 1 hour on occasions. 40 minutes is longer than normal but not unheard of.

Do you have a transaction waiting to be confirmed?

Ah yes Smiley been 24 hours, but that's because of lower than normal fee (apparently Electrum had set it as default?)

the confirmation time average RULE. is not strictly about 10minutes.

its actually an expectation of 2016 blocks over a 2week period. which for simply minds outside of the rule people in conversations say '10 minutes' to avoid the technical math waffle.

it is normal to have blocks unluckily at 40mins and luckily at 2mins. as long as the average is 2016 blocks a fortnight.
mining is a luck game so dont expect 10mins as a strict 'norm'

In quite some cases this ViaBTC accelerator can turn out to be a welcome help for non confirming transactions https://www.viabtc.com/tools/txaccelerator/ Just enter your transaction ID and fill in the captcha, and you're good to go.

Its been 20 hours since my transaction is unconfirmed and had ruined my trading life as I was about to buy PONZI coin but am the most unfortunate guy here. I dont know whats going on in bitcoin network. sometimes unconfirmed transaction sometimes reverse back transaction and so and so. can bitcoin be the safest and most reliable network again like it was few years back. we should really take care ofthe network for our ease and smooth running of its server.

The tx accelerator link posted by 1Referee was a godsend. My transaction confirmed in the next block generated by viaBtc (which was 5-6 blocks later).

Here it is again: https://www.viabtc.com/tools/txaccelerator/

It is not normal. Have 0.07btc stuck on the blockchain for over 17 hours where I have had sends confirmed after 12 hours time with the same amount of the tx fee applied.
This is pretty un nerving if you ask me.

It's what we give up for the decentralization, anonymity, and security I guess. Personally I don't care, as long as the transactions are confirmed at the end of the day all is well but some would beg to differ. But this isn't an unfixable problem though, the core team really need to get their shit together

Well the amount "stuck" has no bearing on how quick the tx will be confirmed. The fee is the determining factor, and lately this has

become a contentious issue, because the spam attacks has pushed up the recommended fee, and people paying their usual fee will

have problems. This sucks, but we cannot do anything about this at the moment.  Angry

You are confusing two issues. The block generation time averages 10 minutes, which means you can get 3 blocks in 20 seconds, or it can take two hours for a block to be generated. It's all random.

Your 17 hour wait is due to the TX being stuck in queue due to the high number of transactions and your fee being inadequate. If you want your TX to confirm more quickly, consider paying the miners appropriately. Hint: https://bitcoinfees.21.co/

They finally did confirm before the 72 hour limit before getting rejected by the blockchain.
Next time I will put more on the transaction fee as the above person mentioned using the site to calculate the correct amount going forward.

Good to know but still, the misallocation of mining capacities shouldn't fall on the user, otherwise the chunk of the community that use btc for microtransactions will be gone. It's definitely fixable, just when is the question.

Unfortunately we must understand that  nowadays bitcoin is not the appropriate way for micropayments. In the future, if segwit will be activated and LN is settled maybe this will be a better and cheaper way for all of these transactions. If not, and the debate between blocksize and segwit supporters never ends, the interested with cryptos user have to use another way. He can use an altcoin instead of bitcoin like as the litecoin.
