I thought that a Radeon HD 6850 should get some relatively good speeds, as it is a fairly new as well as mid-high-end card.

Using GUIMiner, I was getting around 140Mhash/s, which isn't terrible, but shouldn't I be getting better?
Using  Bitminter, I was getting 190Mhash/s, an improvement, but I was overheating, with temps as high as 84C.

I am currently mining on BitMinter, underclocked to 600MHz, in an attempt to not overheat.  I have also re-installed my drivers, with no effect.

Anyone have any tips? Or are these speeds to be expected for this card?

According to the wiki, you should be getting anywhere from 170-300 MH/s depending on how much you over/underclock the device. Have you tried underclocking the memory speed? That may help with the heat problem.
Also, if you haven't already, try cleaning any dust off the GPU and make sure it's well ventilated.

Thanks for the quick responses!

I will post in the other forums as soon as I can, and as for the dust, its all good.

Besides, this GPU has been giving me some problems so maybe it's time to upgrade to a 7850/7870 eh?
