If I remember correctly, MtGox is going to do some minor changes today.

https://mtgox.com/press_release_20130409.html
Quote
TOKYO - JAPAN - April 09, 2013   Orders will only be accepted when there are enough funds available in your wallet!

Dear users, starting on April 17th we will be rolling out a minor change on how people place orders via the Mt.Gox interface. Until recently, anyone could place a buy or sell order for Bitcoin, regardless of how much funds were actually available in their wallet, resulting in an order showing a "Not enough funds" error status in the Open Orders list.

Starting on April 17th, this counter productive scenario will no longer be possible and will be automatically rejected before validating your order; until you have enough funds in your wallet to match the order value.  While this change should only affect a minority of users, it will however have a major impact on our trading platform and improve our system overall performance.

Regards
Mt.Gox Co. Ltd Team.

What are your thoughts about this and how it will (?) effect the price and the swings? Is this the end of Gox-lag?

Is this change already in effect?

The idea is that it should reduce lag, although we have no idea how well it will work in practice.

I believe this will have a strongly positive impact on confidence and the overall Bitcoin ecosystem. I can't say what it will do to the price, but my guess is more stability.

It is supposed to help with lag, as the trading engine won't have to check if an order is funded.
Although lag is pretty much gone since the last 3 days, so I don't know what to make of it.

I don't like this change, since it can take a while for coins to make it into MtGox. I liked how I could do my transfer, go set my sell order, and go to bed. Once the coins finally were confirmed enough to show up, I didn't need to be there to place the sell order afterwards. Just my preference.

For performance they could move unfunded orders to a separate table and then check them for funding every minute or so and move them back to the live server once funded. Just give people a heads up "unfunded order may have an X minute delay before going live, once funded".

wtf, youre telling me i could just put an order in to buy 10000 BTC at $100 to make it seem like there was a huge demand for BTC without having a single cent in my account? that is the most stupid thing ever, I can't believe this has only just been changed.

Nope. It doesn't show on order book, just shows on your order list so it'll automatically get added when your funds arrive.

Nope. It doesn't show on order book, just shows on your order list so it'll automatically get added when your funds arrive.

But still, I guess that the database must keep that unfilled order in mind, which would slow the system down.

Yes, that's what they said. Otherwise there wouldn't be a need to change it. So far it doesn't seem to be in place.

If this is implemented, people that want this behavior will have to setup a bot to keep polling on their balance and now not only will there be some processing required on Gox's side but it will also used up their bandwidth needlessly Sad

Some people said that it isn't put in place yet, and it is already the 17th...
