It was removed.

Eliminating all bad PR and legal risks is a good idea - drug people can always go elsewhere. I'll remove the Silk Road thread if that's the consensus.

It makes a lot more sense to have conversations about things like Silk Road on a truly anonymous forum, such as a Freenet board, than on a public web site.

Hopefully bitcoin does not get deemed a naughty activity by our overlords or else we will have to censor every section other than off-topic.

I don't think this board was the right place for discussion of silk road.  I do wish I knew where else it was being discussed aside from silk road itself though.  Trying to hold a conversation over Tor is bad enough, when that conversation mostly involves people buying and selling drugs it is even worse.

Absolutely!

I have absolutely zero interest in drugs, I even don't smoke, but I would fight for Silk Roads right to have a thread on this forum just like any other.

I think the one thing people are overlooking is that Silk Road violates the forum policy of no illegal activity. Silk Road is clearly illegal regardless of your personal opinions on its operations. Although this will leave a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths - it was the right thing to do for the preservation of the community as a whole.

The discussion was about SR, not about illegal activity. Perhaps SR facilitated illegal activity but discussion of it is legal (in America, anyway). There is no legal foundation to say "SR is illegal." Under American law, only actions are illegal. It would be more logical to say that discussion of the thefts from Mt Gox are prohibited here.

In almost every case of suppression, tyrants cite the lager good, the safety of the nation, the sanctity of the larger group as the reason for suppression and the reason that laws against tyranny should be ignored. Just this one time. For the greater good. Once the danger is passed, we''l be back to warm and fuzzy just like the old days.

This site reminds me that a large fraction of "libertarians" I have met are fascists wearing the clothes of liberty. They just want to lord it over others like most people do, they just use a different deceptive language to hide it.

I followed the SR threads and never saw anyone talking about buying and selling drugs. You should have reported those posts to a mod. Buying and selling controlled substances is illegal and discussing that here probably violates this site's UA.

You cut out relevent portions of my post.  I didn't say the discussions of Silk Road here involved buying and selling drugs, I said the discussions on Silk Road involve buying and selling drugs.  it tends to over shadow any sort of practical or philosophical discussion of the site.

The equivalent here were the constant requests for an invite, but that is not so bad when the discussion is on the regular internet.  on TOR you get more 502 errors than connections and having that page that you just reloaded 15 times turn out to be people talking about how good that weed was, when that is not the info you were looking for, is quite frustrating.

Silk Road is not illegal. It is a marketplace. Market places are legal in every country. Plenty of legal stuff sold there every day.

The legality of the actions performed by site users may be another story depending on what country they live in, and is of concern only between the site users performing those action and their country's law enforcement.

As to those of you who think Silk Road is illegal, please show me the law that Silk Road is breaking, for the country Silk Road resides in and does business in.

You do realize that being an online facilitator of information and services, even markets that users sell illegal stuff through, is legal in some countries with sane service provider laws (or none at all), dont you ?

All I see is propaganda from establishment media and one senator and his lap dogs trying to gin up the public to add to his momentum in and upcoming election year, who is also a member of many banking and finance  committees.

The silk road main site silkroadmarket.org is still online and under the control of the creator. If it was illegal, wouldnt that have been seized by now ?

I do not condone the illegal activities, but I agree with their right to run a marketplace without the pressure and danger of draconian and oppressive legislation of tyrannical governments.

It isnt illegal everywhere. and talking about it isnt illegal... even if it was illegal.

This board is walking down a dangerous path in its effort to add legitimacy to the bitcoin.

Look guys.  FUCK SILK ROAD.

Get TOR, get to other places to discuss this.

If you don't see that such specific discussions regarding Silk Road could endanger the official Bitcoin forum usage, get real, the shit going on that site, while amazing and amusing, is causing people to pay more attention to whatever is associated with it.   Bitcoin already gets enough advertisement from Silk Road, no need for Bitcoin to advertise for them now.  Seriously.   Silk Road is not going away, but these forums where Silk Road isn't even the focus what so ever, could easily be fucked with because of too much bad SR attention.

This isn't an issue of governments shutting down a web site, I mean other idiot users bringing that type of idiot user who is only looking for what SR offers.    Are the daily gambling threads in every forum not enough?  Do we need to know what hash is on sale?  Let's throw in politics to every forum too, and now we have no need for subforums lol

Or not, whatever.

forum.bitcoin.org is the single worst place on the internet to talk about bitcoin.

Dissenting voices are regularly shouted down or dismissed as trolls. Moderators are now deleting longstanding threads of great interest. The worst part is, in bitcoin-forumland, the internet is nothing but America.

Ever consider that Silk Road is a very positive thing for bitcoin in places without restrictive drug laws, in places that aren't America?

This kinda sucks, guys. I'm not here strictly to complain because there are still a few interesting posts here now and again, but I hardly ever check in nowadays because I've found a place over on reddit where you can get all the interesting stuff and it's still fairly even-handed. Try http://www.reddit.com/r/bitcoin if y'all get fed up with it.

And enjoy your well-earned reputation as an insular hive of boosters, trolls and shills. And you know, I realize that your house is your house - go ahead and do whatever you think is necessary. Just remember that the internet has a really long memory and you can't delete Silk Road from the history of bitcoin.

Being very pro-drug, I see the benefits of telling all drug users to use Bitcoin.  It makes sense.  Doesn't make sense to the benefit of the drugs or Bitcoin to do it the other way, knowing that the stupid general American public already has their opinions about Silk Road and Bitcoin thanks to the news, this would not help anyone want to use drugs, and it definitely will not help anyone want to use Bitcoin (speaking general public terms).

All you people, keep getting angry at a web board about Bitcoins.  I hope you all know that whether or not Silk Road or any of that shit gets talked about on these forums or not, of course they aren't going away.  Those places exist because people want them to, and not discussing on this forum won't change that, and may in fact preserve it better Smiley

I'm not a regular user in this forum, but removal of Silk Road thread is censorship in the most disguisting form. I will not bother contributing to this forum if my posts or even whole threads are going to be removed based on short-term goals by people controlling Bitcoin.

Expect to be defaced in future. (not by me, of course!)
