Here is an OECD paper from 2002 on the nature and future of currency. Anyone wishing to learn a bit more about academic theories of money might find this helpful.

Chapter 2 provides a good history of money.

Chapter 4: 'Intangible Economy and Electronic Money' is an interesting academic discussion on the changing nature of money and 'the shift to the intangible'.
