I don't believe that we have fully secure mail provider. Protonmail might be close but there are still some questions to be asked.

My main concern, how can we can tell that my message sent is being encrypted with the correct public key?
I mean Protonmail is the creator and distributor of the encryption keys, they can switch the keys and we will never know, right?

Technically it is possible, but you and the other party have to understand how to work with the javascript debugger within your browser. From there you could see whether or not everything is as protonmail tells you it is (i.e verify keys).

If you spot that protonmail has been messing with the keys, then it's obvious that your information has been accessible to protonmail. That's always a risk since you rely on protonmail to create and distribute everything in full honesty.
And I guess thats the reason why Proton mail is an open source to proved that they don't hide any backdoors or whatever. If you can understand the source codes of this application you can take a look here https://github.com/ProtonMail/WebClient
Checking the source doesn't mean protonmail as distributor of the keys can't just hand you over a slightly different key that allows them to seize your 'hidden' information, while you guys think everything is just fine.

That's why it's important that after every mail exchange between you and the other party you both manually verify the keys to see whether or not protonmail has been messing with things.

Hi there,

We've used ProtonMail for over a year and it is really good. The service & support provided by them is really good, but it depends on what's your main objective. If your main objective is storing, sending and receiving sensitive documents or messages or keeping yourself/company "private", then this is right for you. Many organisations and companies scan and read your emails for various purposes, such as advertisement or general monitoring. Even large companies sometimes see your messages while they move around as they are unencrypted.

They have various plans, depending on your requirements (you can even use your custom domain) and free version gives you a @protonmail.com email. Someone has already sent you a link with more info about how emails can be encrypted to non ProtonMail users. It is very simple, they receive a link which they can open and type the password. The question is how to tell this password to the other person. You cannot use any general messaging systems, texts, emails, etc. as someone somewhere will have a record of this password. This password should be given out offline or by some secure means.

The main issue for business and professional users is the fact that Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, etc. have integrated their stuff into single corner of the internet. You need Google accounts, MS accounts, Yahoo accounts to access many services/websites/apps, etc. and you have to deal with this issue every time.

The only thing I dislike about Protonmail is we can't use our own domain with free version and only 1 email. And I would like to see some features included like Zoho mail..
Tutanota is also a good one simailar, It encrypts the entire mailbox, does not log IP addresses, and the source code it open for anyone

Fucking eh man, some people just don't really understand the good mindset of "better be safe then sorry" like would you rather make something more secure in order to make sure someone won't get access to it. Gmail isn't broken in the least and I love using it, but once reading about all of the data that google sells about you it's really disgusting to see all of that information.

They even sell the really important things about you, like lets just say you have some sort of mental disability and they know by the sites you visit for help / support you could easily be targeted for ads on therarpy without an issue and you probably wouldn't bat an eye and just think they're trying to help you.

Guys, if you want a secure mail service just try protonmail and tutamail. After using that mail services you will never look backward. Just try and see difference.

I use both. Based on the advertisements I get on gmail, I'm fairly sure that they go through your emails to target them towards you.

I trust the people behind Proton Mail much more than I trust Google, however the lack of SMTP/IMAP/... support is annoying for me as I dislike webmail and like to use tools such as git-send-email. The lack of text/plain emails on Proton Mail also annoys me :/

Luckily the support team are very responsive.

  • ProtonMail is open source: https://github.com/ProtonMail/WebClient This means the webClient, the main software, all the cryptography libraries they use is open for everyone to see and check for themselves from day one.
  • They accept bitcoin. For their paid services and also as donation
  • Your Email is encrypted End-To-End meaning the server has no access to your content since it is being encrypted inside your browser.
  • It is based in Switzerland, meaning they respect your privacy more!
  • It supports Tor.
  • The design looks cool Smiley https://protonmail.com/images/slider/column-message.jpg
  • Also has iOS and Android support

It is worth mentioning that for highly sensitive information you should still take other precautions.

I've been using gmail for so many years now and I haven't heard about ProtonMail. I'm quite satisfied with what Gmail has as of the moment but I would like to consider trying ProtonMail because of the features that you lined above. Thanks for putting that up. It got me interested in it and I'll try to register there. One thing that I don't like with Gmail is that they always email me with those pesky advertisements that plague half of my screen. It just irritates me because it increases the chance of me not reading an important email. Hopefully, ProtonMail will provide me good service.

I've been a long time user of Gmail and I've really loved using it for all this time, Google is one of those companies that is linked into to most things and can usually be used to sign into a majority of sites on the internet. Though, with recent revelations of the amount of data companies are really tracking about me and everyone else in the world which is sold down the line to marketers and so on I was looking for a better email service as they pretty much have my entire life on their.

I've seen many people saying ProtonMail is safe, secure and the way to go but I've never really used it and wouldn't really want to try without hearing input from some users, would love some people to let me know how it goes.

I believe even the Proton mail that is assumed to be free might not actually be free after all because how would they pay for what the services they are offering? The next is to let adversitement frustrate you because they have to get the money from somewhere. Even though currently they might be the best option but gradually when their popularity started getting high, I see them following the foot steps of gmail.

@audaciousbeing

Protonmail is a free service, but there are certain limitations to how far you you can stretch everything. And no, there aren't any ads to annoy people.

If you think you'll need more functionalities, there are paid plans that you can choose from, where you can even activate single features instead of a whole plan. It can safe you a buck or two.

Other than that, protonmail's only objective is to offer privacy minded features and not to follow what gmail is doing. Protonmail isn't aiming to be something close to a regular email service.

After taking a look at Proton Mail, I find it quite interesting to see. They seem like a really safe and secure organization that has established an excess amount of reputation. Evidently, not as much as Gmail but they seem to be invested in security (ex. SSL protection, encryption, etc.)

At first glance, Proton actually looks a lot safer to me than Gmail simply because of their encryption service that allows all emails to be locked up and unable for the servers to comprehend. This is great for security because, as we all know, Gmail has been selling our information for awhile now. That's how they target ads to you.

But Proton doesn't seem to have this problem. Apparently they will know nothing about you. Also, Proton seems to be great to protect you from hackers because of the encryption service. Of course someone can still hack into your account, so you need to make a secure password with either Gmail or Proton.

Honestly, if you're just emailing family and friends and don't have to send info like credit or something incriminating you can just use what you're comfortable with. Whether it be Proton or Gmail or even Yahoo. But if you're say, a doctor, and need to protect your info I'd recommend trying Proton. See how you like it. Perhaps this program will become the new service of the future - to protect our information.

Only the storage is encrypted. If you're sending email to somebody else (like someone using Gmail), your message could be read in transit.

Gmail may not have the security features that Protonmail has but Gmail does provide a more fuller suite of services that can be used across multiple platforms. For example Gmail has mobile apps, calendaring, etc while Protonmail has yet to mature to that level functionality.

Another limitation is that at the moment you need to wait for at least 3-4 weeks (if not longer) to get a Protonmail account.

You mis the whole point here. Protonmail isn't meant to be used as mainstream email application. If that was the case, it would offer a much better free service experience to compete with the rest.

Other than that, what do you mean with that you have to wait 3 to 4 weeks to get an account? You can sign up and start sending and receiving emails with protonmail within 3 minutes.

With hackers, I'm quite comfortable using gmail, which as far as I know hasn't had any serious security breaches in the past - as long as you have a random/long password you should be fine.  If you value your privacy though I would go with Proton Mail, because by no stretch of my brain can I trust Google not to view private information themselves.
