You don't control your private keys and you share them with a third party. Meaning the coins stored on a web wallet aren't yours. Yes it's unsafe and not just from a hacking point of view. If the service goes down or they decide to lock your account, you can't do anything.

So should use a offline/desktop based one instead?

One thing, There is no safe on the internet because most of them are just have great security but not fully safe from hackers or other criminals. If you want a comfortable wallet then you can try blockchain.info, i don't say that wallet is pure safe but it is the mainstream wallet that most of my friends are using and the advantage of using that is, if you cash out in different account, you can receive it instantly without waiting anytime but as other said, there is no safe because it is all about on how you take care of your account and how you manage your security.

Yes, if choose a web wallet should be more careful to save bitcoin because there are hackers and we have to really to save bitcoin on web wallet trustworthy. But actually it all depends on the use of the wallet, if only to save temporarily and then convert it into money was not a problem to save in web wallet. But if to save in the long run better on the desktop wallet because it is safer. But I think web wallet now have the security that is already good as blockchain.info, it may not matter if you want to try.

It's quite safe to use few most popular bitcoin wallets, but it's not recommend to use it as your main wallet. It would be best and most secure to hold biggest part of your bitcoins on desktop or hardware wallet. You can keep bitcoins in web wallet to use it for your daily needs. And if you want to use web wallet, choose wallet which gives access to your private keys.

Wallets have been hacked normally when you search your wallet in Google search and get into inappropriate site, which is same like the wallet site. Apart from you are not hackable to anyone until then you share your private key or DAT file to anyone. Try to prefer desktop wallets like electrum or bitcoincore also would be fine.

Web wallets should be used for petty transactions and could be regarded to be safe only if we do our part by avoiding downloading files on our crypto pc and clicking unknown links. There is also the risk of the company holding the keys pulling the plug and you lose all coins if stored there.

Yup, This is what newbies should remember always, Web wallets are very comfortable to use but they always need to remember that they don't need to download a lot of files and click different links online because most of them have spyware or malware that can infect their personal computer and take their personal informations and also their bitcoin without even noticing it.
