Mining without extra fans

Simple test to see if the heat is due to the lack of fans, or the video card:

1. Open the case.
2. Point a box fan next to the case, and crank it up.
3. Try to mine.

If you are still experiencing 90+, it's the card. I had an 8800gt that was brand new and would overheat very quickly - I got it RMA'd, and the new one has been working fine for years.

I opened the case earlier and pointed the fan to it, I could get about 89° on 370mh/s if I remember right. Now with closed case and the fan in the rear to let the air flow out the box I get my 99+ again..

avtually running 200mh/s at memory 180 and clock 459, at 88°C. Case closed (what a pun.)





@Ognasty: how do you get 8 of them into your pc? show me a pic? where do you get the electricity from?


I guess I'm letting the pc run even lower at night and buying a second fan tomorrow morning.


Btw, I'm from germany, I won't buy anything at newegg because it's... well, shipping costs?

I run my single-6990 miner with the case open and a big AC room fan pointed at the whole shebang. It is A LOT less noisy that way.

I got a fan doing 1500 RPM. I installed it in the mid-rear and it does like, nothing. CPU and stuff seems 2° colder but thats all.

If I'm running guiminer I get 110°C and the system crashes.

Looks like a broken card...

Try re-seating the HSF, and use good TIM!
Unless you have 100°F ambient temps, there is no reason why any card should be running that hot at stock voltage! If you are excessively OCed, there is your problem! If not, it sounds to me like the HSF is not FLAT on the GPU die, or your GPU fan died!

GPU Fan is running, Heatsink seems to be adjusted properly. I actually have to underclock this card to use it for mining.

I'm trying to bring them back into the store and get a replacement if the sink's alright. Thanks

Try if you can get your hands on a beQuiet PWM/USC SilentWings Fan. They are engineered in Germany and are the best I ever had. I mean these badboys are completely coated in rubber! oO


Q: Would you position a fan to blow between the GPUs from the Top or from behind in direction of the caseslots?

So , maybe I wanna try undervolting next. Afterburner doesn't work with voltage on non-msi products, so I have to go to the BIOS. Any help with that?

On other notes, the GPU crashed with 95°C and wouldnt work anymore, so I installed my old e-geforce GTS 8800, which runs at ~ caution ~

80°C standby and 100° mining 21 mhs. And this thing won't die!

This seems a lot like a bad-airflow area, but I installed a 8mm fan, letting some air out and when my 5870 crashed, the case was opened and a normal sized table-fan was letting the air either against or away from the card (tested both, no real differences).

How do I add more fans with only 2 basic fan-pins on the motherboard?

I think you should take some pictures of inside your case to show us how your setup. It really seems like your lacking proper airflow...

Yeah, I know. I installed only one 8mm fan to let out the air, but my Card crashed when the case was open, and a table fan (approx 1 foot) was cooling the card. It got 95° hot and died out. So we got a Card that's too hot, even with unusual cooling AND a Case that has bad airflow.

You could try with a more massive copper block and/or liquid metal as heat conducting paste. But be careful with the stuff it is quite nasty and can cause shorts if you use too much.

They sell biger ones in Hornbach for about 4EUR in CZ, maybe in Germany too. Not as noisy as cheap PC fans at same effect
