Hello all,

since I'm pretty new to all of this I'd like to ask for your opinion on what software I should use to efficiently mine ppcoins.
My setup: AMD Phenom II x4 955 BE, XFX ATI Radeon HD5870. For now I consider using cgminer, if there's no better/faster/more efficient miner around. What do you think?

Thanks for your help!

I've always used cgminer and haven't been disappointed. I tried the GUIminers, but for some reason my hashrates (and connection reliability) were worse than when using cgminer.

I've tried cgminer but honestly lost patience after 1 hour not being able to get it to run, so I switched to GUIminer and it works now @~370 mhash/s. Quite okay I think. Next thing I need to investigate is the power consumption thing. Don't want to spend a fortune on power bills if there is no chance in mining enough coins in time to compensate that and still have something left.

You might like to try poclbm too.

I think GUIminer as it is at present uses poclbm by default.

poclbm is console tool, so you should have some experience but for servers it is good Smiley

I found the GUIminer to be pretty straightforward, and if it's based on poclbm and works now at that mhash-rate, I think I will stick to that for a while and play around with it.

At the moment I'm trying to figure out what settings I could use to have the mining running in background at lets say 50% of what the gfx card could run at, so I can let it run with low fan speed and low temperature during the night (I sleep in the same room, so a loud fan would be a major downside, lol).
