Hello,
I find both quite unreliable at the moment, just joined the community and had BIG issues to start trading BTC. It should not be so.

BTC-E is the clear winner always running granted it might be hard to get cash into there but trading is smooth

BTC-e also has lower withdraw limits and supports more crypto currencies.

Having a look at the recent comments of https://btc-e.com/news/138 makes me feel a bit uneasy.

marc000, you won't see such comments on Mt-Gox because Mt-Gox don't have comment system No one is safe from hacking.

the BTC-E issue was due to people visiting infected sites and getting their accounts compromised

I would definitely use BTC-e...while it is much harder to get cash in, it works a lot better than gox and I really like the format a lot better too

Well I started a few days ago. 100 bucks got swallowed up by Bitfloor after i used locatill and they they shut down without sending me an again.
Tried virvox and I don't see my bit coins yet. I wish someone would just sell me bitcoins through paypal or amazon or something

You also must consider the fact that btc-e trades a fraction of the volume and a fraction of the depth of book that gox does. btc-e has a more limited api (in my opinion) for custom interfaces. But then, gox's website simply is really poor, both in design and functionality. Trying to place an order on their website is sketchy as the entry box for price updates as trades occur, causing you to loose where you were typing and potentially introducing errors to someone trying to type fast and hit buy/sell. Neither exchange supports trading methods which are considered fairly necessary on any true currency exchange, and there is a significant lack of protections in place.
Basically, both are what I'd call "trade and pray", that your order goes in at the level you requested in a reasonable time frame, and that you got matched if touched.

I trade at both exchanges, even as much as I dislike Gox, and Gox is a 51% attack on BTC. I think a crowd sourced co-op type exchange must be created for BTC to function fairly and freely. BTCe is more fun than Gox due to the greatness of the trollbox. I'm sorry for the people who lost their money due to a data mine type hack. Gox has just as many issues as BTCe. Gox lures people to put money into Gox then slams them with their BS KYC stuff. If you don't send them (who ever they are) your info then all your coin/cash are gone, and I believe Gox considers it theirs after a few months, maybe 6. Also, if you notice Gox's order entry is BS. When you enter a sell the BTC is not removed from your available funds, that means there is nothing backing a sell order, just as there's nothing backing a buy order. So the quick among you will think, so what? When it sells the coin or cash will be removed. Ahh not so fast. What that means is anyone can enter whatever bids/asks they want for any coin or fiat amount to game the walls, and thus game the metrics used by bots and us lowly people who use charts. I'm pretty sure if I wanted I could enter a sell order for 5000BTC on Gox at 99.99, or any dollar amount and it will show in the system as a valid sell order because there is nothing required in an account to back up the order. Until my dream is realized for a crowd sourced not for profit exchange then from the looks of it the exchange of the future will be Kraken. https://www.kraken.com/https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=159974.0. They may still be looking for beta testers just look at the thread on the forum and find out or do a search for kraken.

I use BTC-E for cross-crypto exchanging as it is one of the few exchanges that supports Litecoin, Namecoin.

I think the big problem is getting money into bitcoins. It seems risky trying anything other than mtgox, but then it's hard/expensive to get money into mtgox

Same here. When I need to buy or sell LTC, I go there.
