Graphics card for beginner miner

Hi,

I can basically get 50% off a graphics card because of this points system i have accumulated on my credit card for years.
They will expire so i figure i should use them now.

I have a goal to try buy a better card in the future and also a better power supply, for now i do not have the budget for that.

I would like to know though of the following cards  which would be basic or okay for mining just in general ?
Is it always AMD first ?

I have the GTX 1050 in mind, not sure if i can manage the ti version but lets go with the vanilla option for now.
I then have the GtX 950 or Gtx 960 forgot which one, Gigabyte brand.
I also have the Radeon RX460 in mind... not sure which but perhaps the Saphire or something.

Of those which would you suggest i get ?

I suggest u get the GTX 960 since the RX 460 is almost the same as a GTX 950 while a GTX 1050 is slightly slower than a GTX 960.

You seems to have a low budget considering the graphic cards you are proposing. But if you can afford one, I really recommend you to buy the new RX 570, it costs only 169$ and really is a killer.

For low power graphic cards, sadly I can not help you, as this is not an area where I am good it.

first of all, you have to know, what your energy costs are.

If you plan a low budget project, I´d choose a GTX 1050TI.

I am interested in knowing why that card is a killer compared to RX 470 and RX 480. All the people in this forum are saying the RX 570 is just some rebrand of the RX 470 same power at wall, same memory, same number of transistors etc. Why you say it is a killer , maybe you know something I don't ?

I don't think 5xx have nothing more than 4xx other than the number of compute units, and a small more power efficieny increase, the only reason you buy 5xx now is for better resell after a year or so.

I don't think 5xx have nothing more than 4xx other than the number of compute units, and a small more power efficieny increase, the only reason you buy 5xx now is for better resell after a year or so.

Thank you. I don't intend to resell anything as I plan to keep it mining even when profit will go down normally during that time. I am mining Ethereum with 4 Rx 480 and I am happy with 100 mhsh at 600 watt, stock settings with XFX RX 480 cards.

GTX 950 and GTX 960 are generation-old and less efficient, ignore them - the GTX 1050 will mine better than the 950 and very close to the 960 at MUCH lower power draw.

The real difference between the RX 5xx series and the RX 4xx series is that AMD moved to a different process (still on the same process NODE though) that allows the GPU to clock somewhat higher at a slight cost in efficiency compared to the older version of the same GPU on the other process.
 The memory options between the 2 lines are THE SAME, except I don't think anyone is bothering to make 4GB 6600Mhs memory clock cards any more.

 The other difference is that the 4xx series seems to now be out of production, and only "remaining stock" and used/refurb cards are available.

I somewhat hope because i am not from wealth or easy location where these items are cheaper..... but hope that the Vega will not be too expensive.

I'd guess you won't see Vega cards under $300 at all and likely $400+ range for all of them for the first year or so they exist.

RX 580 8GB is a decent first card as well, quite capable and can be had for around $250 give or take...  Depends on your budget and what you're mining too, but I feel that Open CL based mining is generally better done with AMD Radeon's when it comes to best bang for buck.


As for Vega, assuming that it's going on the same track as the Fury series, we can only speculate that the prices will reflect the Fury  launch prices, more or less.. high end.  I'm too lazy to google and post, but if you do it you can find the launch prices, I got in when the prices started to mellow out so I paid about $260 per Fury, I think launch price was probably $400-$500.

 I believe AMD is still aiming for late 2'nd / sometime in 3'd quarter release on the first VEGA cards - but no new news on them for a while, so looking more like 3'd quarter sometime.

 It IS interesting that NVidia chose to reset the pricing on their high-end cards very recently though - part response to the release of the 1080 Ti I'm sure, but I also get the strong impression that they are doing a "preemptive strike" on pricing vs. Vega in the range it should land in.

try Radeon RX 570 or Radeon RX 580 GPU. it's cheap compare to RX470 and RX480 and it's new in the market.
