Author Topic: Coinbase have closed my account????  (Read 813 times)

I am new to this and purchased some medication via coinbase. Didn't really know what I was doing and ended up sending funds to the email address of the company I was purchasing from. They contacted me to tell me that they couldn't access the funds and they would be returned to coinbase after 30 days. (This was also confirmed by coinbase, after I contacted them)

The 30 days is not up yet but I've received an email from coinbase to say that  I have engaged in prohibited use in violation of the terms and conditions??? and they have closed my account. I have contacted  them and they said I can still access the account but they can no longer process brokerage orders. Apparently I can still send balances off site to external addresses. Does this mean that I will still be able to access the funds that are returned after the 30 days? When I log on my profile has been cleared of data.

The 30 days period is in their policy if i remember.. Wich you accepted when creating your account, as you are supposed to read TOS/Policy of any site, specialy like this. I know TOS/Policy should be called  "Ignored" instead... I am not surprised about your story as it is a direct violation of their rules. And yes, the funds and they would be returned to coinbase after 30 days

What sounds strange is the part where you send Bitcoins to an email address. This should not work. A Bitcoin address should look like this:    1AdChpBsHiViq1JaEFfms9S5bfhQ3jxXV6
Sending to an email address should have resulted in an error massage. So i wonder where your Bitcoins went?Can you tell us more?

Sending to an email address should have resulted in an error massage. So i wonder where your Bitcoins went?Can you tell us more?

i wrote the same thing here, but deleted my comment after reading LeGaulois comment. and it is understandable that there is such feature since Coinbase is not exactly a bitcoin wallet, it is an account that people make with their email address so it is unique and you may be able to send funds to their "accounts" using their email address!

There is a FOMO brewing...

Seems like i am no expert on coinbase, but if the company received the funds, then then you should be fine. Or was it not your goal? Did they want to perform a charge back of sort or what funds are you talking about? Did you have had more then just what you send? You should be given the option to withdraw your remaining Bitcoin to an address. You just need to make a new address. Try some wallet or make a paper wallet. I guess it depend on what your plan is what you want to do with the Bitcoin. Keep them, spend them or exchange back to fiat.

I sent £52 worth of BTC (presumably these are Bitcoins) and sorry I don't know anything about charge back or anything. I just don't understand how if unclaimed they can be sent back to my account when this has now been closed.

This is a response from coinbase when I initially found out that I had sent the BTC to the wrong address.

 "Thank you for contacting Coinbase Support,
Because of our commitment to account security, we cannot cancel or refund a transfer to an incorrect or invalid email address once it has been initiated. However, after 30 days, any coins that have not been claimed by the recipient by signing up with that email address will automatically be returned to the sender. This means that you should receive your lost transaction 30 days from the send date if it is not claimed.

There is no need to take any additional action at this point. If unclaimed, the funds will be returned to your account automatically.

Please let me know if you have additional questions or concerns and thank you for choosing Coinbase"

Medication bro ? Tongue You sure you didn't mean to say the ones you get through darkweb ? Bitcoin/Medication seems a lot easier to connect.

Didn't really know what I was doing and ended up sending funds to the email address of the company I was purchasing from. They contacted me to tell me that they couldn't access the funds and they would be returned to coinbase after 30 days. (This was also confirmed by coinbase, after I contacted them)
Any linked addresses ? Company' email ? Or whatever information you have ?

Did you ask them what happened to your funds ? Btw by any chance did you prohibit their T&C ? Sounds suspicious to me.

I do not want to start a discussion on double standards, but in this forum many people always post how unfair it is that Bitcoin is always mentioned in the context of illegal activities. Let us not point fingers here and give him the benefit of doubt at least. But in fact i do not care what he wants to buy with it. Let us focus on helping this guy. Bitcoin was invented so nobody besides you can decide where you want to transfer your money. Coinbase is maybe forced by some law to close your account, but we do not have to like it.

You should be able to see your transaction history (if the transaction went thru/the money was claimed). If you still can access these date with your closed account. If the company did not claim the money (that is what they wrote you right?), you should get it back in 30 days. At this point you should be able to send your money to another address. Maybe ask their support to confirm, that you will be able to do so in x day, when the refunds are in. Have everything else prepared by then.

My medication was legitimate I can assure you,  and I re ordered it via the same method ( purchased more Bitcoins and sent them to the correct address) and it actually arrived today.

The original transaction did go through as this was confirmed by the company I sent payment to and coinbase themselves.

I'm just concerned that the funds won't be returned  if my account has been closed.

Is this small amount the full refund or do you expect to get more? Are the 30 days over? I would suggest to make a paper wallet (bitaddress.org) or download mycelium to your smartphone. Then send your funds to this wallet and make sure that the fee is not to small, but coinbase should have a default setting that should work fine. After that you only have to sell your Bitcoin. You are located in the UK right? If it is a bigger city, then you could try localbitcoins.com or the local trader function on mycelium. In this forum under marketplace it should also be possible, but i would prefer it to be face to face, but other people prefer online. So your call.
