Surely graphic card mining right now is all but pointless. Is anybody still making coins today (at a sensible rate) with GPUs?

I would look for a bargain 7970 in all honesty - I have tried just about everything else.
One 7970 gives more mh/s when overclocked than 2 overclocked 7950's
Overclocked they will do 700mh/s
2 graphic cards in a pc case is bad news - one is usually pushed up against the side so has no airflow and runs hot - ejecting its hot air straight into the intake of the next card.
Honestly the cooling is so badly designed for multi card setups.

7950 or 2 x 7790 not 7970 or 2x 7950 2 x 7950 gives 1100 mh/s. 7970 gives 700 mh/s P.S. I will buy 1 7950

Before investing in hardware, let this site do the maths for you: https://bitclockers.com/calcOn the page, make sure you modify the Difficulty change from monthly 2% to something more realistic. Currently it is around 15% each other week. For your reference: http://bitcoin.sipa.be/Hope this helps, T

Right now with the price 100+ USD per bitcoin and the current difficulty, it is.

Have the ASIC and other dedicated miners hit production yet, or are they still back ordered?

People have been saying this on and off for months, and I say it depends. Given current rates, GPU mining does still pay for itself, at least. I have been watching my RoI on GPUs since August, knowing the landscape was changing, but for me, personally, GPU mining is more profitable today than it ever has been. The number of coins I receive continues to go down as difficulty continues to rise, so STARTING GPU mining now with newly bought hardware may be a whole different deal. I's suggest following Gavin's advice towards Bitcoin in general: only invest what you are willing to lose. I would say that includes hardware purchased for mining as well. Good luck, all.

I don't really care about that when chatting he was referring to the words "go buy". Nobody can just "go buy" a butterfly labs product, the pre-order queue is massive, they haven't started shipping anything yet. More like "go pre-order, wait 6 months for product" (assuming they were to start shipping this week) Also, it's debateable whether the 1.5TH rigs will even be cost effective given the power issues BFL is currently attempting to resolve.

Mining on GPU is still profitable! If not for Bitcoin for Litecoin! I would go with a 7950 if I were you : you can easily achieve up to 600-630 Mhash/s (15% less performance than a 7970 while consuming 30% less).
