Never try to talk anyone into understanding bitcoin or bitcoin trading. It's toally meaningless. Your family member can be particularly disturbing if you're a day trader. They are going to make a fuss of everything you do. When you do a good business, you're not hailed. When you make a mistake, you're in a hell of complaints.

I love how bitcoin cultists blame their own lack of social skills on people just not being believers.

I wouldn't care about people laughing at me for believing in bitcoins because in the end it's going to be the early adopters who will be rich.

Why not? Next time someone tries to borrow money from you you can tell him:"Well ,you know that stupid Bitcoin business fucked me up and I am now broken..."

I've found the best way to explain bitcoin is by establishing that you are only explaining it. (aka not selling it) I mentioned bitcoin to my family in the past but only in passing, never said I believe in it. When it starts showing up in the news they come and ask me more. I then explain it to them. I also cite sources showing major investors are getting into the game, companies are accepting btc etc. Show them that it's not just a joke/scam. Don't try to explain daytrading, if you choose to do that then make sure you're smart about it.
You shouldn't try to convince anyone that bitcoin should be used by them. Only explain what bitcoin is, and the right people will start getting on board. Even my mom at this point doesn't view bitcoin as a joke. But she's wary of it. Which makes sense for her age/perspective. Hell I'm wary of it. But I see it as a useful technology and describe it as such to people who ask me about it.
