These forums and altcoins could have made some people very rich, or a lot poorer, with TINYEST amount of effort.

I was reading the NEM launch thread, all you had to do was reply to it and they gave you 4 million NEM. Thats worth nearly $26,000, to reply to a thread and say "i'm interested".

In another thread I was reading (I cant remember it now but it was old) people were paying in bitcoin to get some of a new coin that I think is basically dead now. They were just casually sending the developers 5 bitcoin here, 10 bitcoin there. Oh my, if only they knew....

Obviously no one knows the future, but, If you haven't ever done so I encourage you to go find some threads from like 4 or 5 years ago and just read them for a bit, you will be yelling at the screen "omg, dont give them 100 bitcoin for that you could be a rich-ish!!"

Anyway, it was just an observation.

If anyone in the "announcement" section of the forum says "all you have to do is reply here and we will send you some of our new fancy alt coins" just reply because you never know!! (i'm sure everyone would anyway,  but still...)

Yeah, I had a similar situation with Steemit (obv was a get rich quick scheme for the owners but there was still a lot of money to be made). At the time I thought it was nothing special and just didn't even try to write an article or sign up. Definitely regret that now, since I've seen people get paid hundreds of dollars for average articles, not to mention the 5000% increase in Steemit's price.

That rule was implemented 3~ (I think) years ago. When I first started using these forums, altcoin giveaways were allowed. There were tons of Dogecoin giveaways at the time, IIRC.

Also OP, it's good to note that most of the insane altcoin profits that could have been made are also due largely in part to Bitcoin's appreciation over time. Currencies are typically pegged as a BTC pair. 4 million NEM is only worth $27,000 now because Bitcoin is worth $1200 each right now.

If you are looking for giveaways, then trawl the subreddits for the coins, usually they have a tipbot and tip people coins to try to drum up interest.

This is a great thing to do, because you lose nothing whereas can eventually win big time.  And yet I think such announcements are quite rare. At best we can see some faucets with altcoins there. By the way, it is also  inconvenient that one has to make new wallets for new alts. That's why I don't even want to have deal with anything except bitcoin, I don't want a mess of wallets and passwords.

I think Steemit has real potential just some implementation flaws (the inital inflation rate for example was absurd, the Steem token should have been a fixed supply linked to Bitcoin, the token is easily traded around but when an author wants to "cash out" the price is fixed to bitcoin, I think thats possible)

But with all the "fake news" hype going around now, Steemit should be running around doing marketing like crazy saying "look we have a de-centralized news network over here" and encourage their users to become citizen journalists.

Spending all my time in the ANN forum for the past 4 years would cost me a lot more than $27,000 in lost opportunity cost.
