Digital Bitbox (a hardware wallet) Discussion

I recently received my Digital Bitbox, a new hardware wallet.  So far it looks good, no Chrome extension needed.  Looks pretty simple so far (I have only loaded some BTC on it), but I have not explored its other capabilities.

It also appears to be tough, I did not feel that neither the Trezor nor Ledger Nano is tough.

It looks a little more like an ordinary flash-drive than the others above.  It also has an option for a secondary password (to disguise your balance in your main addresses), an option I have not played with.  It can pair up with a smartphone.

Made in Switzerland (Trezor and Ledger also made in Europe, hmm).

I'm just thinking -

For the price of $50, you could almost afford 3 Ledger HW.1s (Or Citadelles, I think what they're called now).

The only difference is that the storage is on an external SD card instead of on a security chip. You also need a standalone application which may or may not be safer. Honestly, I'd rather trust something like a chrome extension, since Google has a relatively strict Content Security Policy, on top of which data can be encrypted.

I own a HW.1, and it's actually sturdier than I thought. Think of it as a credit card. You don't snap it in half unless you actually want to.

Digital Bitbox does not support altcoins; a real disadvantage when a Ledger Nano S is only $70. Also no Android Mycelium support. Originally sold for $120 now $78 with shipping from Switzerland. Ledger Nano S is sold out right now so someone who needs a bitcoin hardware wallet right away can get one of these. However Trezor is still shipping ($128 with Express shipping) and I really don't see this unit hurting Trezor sales at all. I looked at all the videos and could not glean any information about how DBB sets fees.

Stellaw bought a couple to review last year but never got past opening the packaging before going on a rant about insecure packaging. They ship in a well sealed FedEx envelope and the cardboard package was heat sealed inside a mylar bag. No tamper resistant seals, guess they consider the heat sealed mylar bag sufficient. The FedEx envelope reached me sealed so no worries.

Despite being a one trick pony for bitcoin only I like this unit. The ability to pair the unit to your phone to prevent MITM attacks is very nice. They are using a BitPay Bitcore backend same as Trezor. You can't set fees manually but have the ability to choose priority, standard, economy and budget fee levels. I have never had a transaction take longer than half an hour using priority fee with Trezor so expect Digital Bitbox to be similar. You can also use over Tor.

There was some mention on Twitter that Electrum would work with the BitBox but no joy here with Electrum 2.8.3. Once I have played with the unit for a week or so will write up a full review. At first glance this looks like a good and very secure bitcoin only hardware wallet. If you don't need altcoins the BitBox is all you need. Ledger Nano S is out of stock until August. Trezor ships now but cost with 2 day shipping is $128 or $50 more than BitBox.

The Ledger Nano S and Trezor are definitely better by my standards because they both include altcoin support, something the bitbox lacks. However, I'm having trouble finding the Nano S in stock in the US and the bitbox is slightly cheaper. Additionally, more hardware wallets is a good thing because it encourages competition.

I don't see how could this hardware wallet be better than Ledger or Trezor.
They only support Bitcoin, aren't supported in any major wallet (Mycelium, Electrum) and IMO the hardware looks weak;

Meanwhile, Ledger Nano S supports BTC, BCH, LTC, ETH, DASH, XRP and others, can be used with MEW, Electrum, Mycelium, GreenAddress, has a LED screen and looks nicer.

How heavy is it? What is the construction materials like? I hope it is not that heavy. The heavier the item is, the more chances it gets messed up if you accidentally drop it. I'm kinda looking for a secondary hardware wallet which i will give to my fiancee for her spending.

That's actually not true. The Digital Bitbox supports any cryptocurrency that uses ECDSA as a signing algorithm. The digital bitbox is unlike other hardware wallets, it is just a signer. This means that you actually have to have software that understands the transactions and prepares them to be signed unlike the Trezor and Ledger Nano S which do that preparation on device (which is why they have to support individual altcoins). The Digital Bitbox can support any altcoin using ECDSA so long as the software that you are using supports the Digital Bitbox.

That's not true either. Electrum supports using the Digital Bitbox.

The digital bitbox is very light and small. It has no screen and is about the size of a small USB flash drive.

Kind of.

The best description for it is a signer-on-a-stick. It holds private keys and gives you an ECDSA signature for whatever data you give it (and a few other things, but those are less relevant). It does not matter whether you are signing messages, transactions, or arbitrary data, it will sign it. This means that it works for anything that needs an ECDSA signatures, including things that are not cryptocurrencies.

Thanks for clearing that up, I was not aware for that. What other prominent altcoins use ECDSA, or rather which ones don't use ECDSA? Is there software support for any of those other coins yet?

The vast majority of altcoins use ECDSA. Any coin that is based off of Bitcoin Core will likely use ECDSA. Litecoin certainly uses ECDSA.

Is there software support for any of those other coins yet?

I don't know. Digital Bitbox themselves do not really offer a wallet to use. So it depends on all of the other wallet developers to support it.

can someone tell me what are the coins that are using ECDSA? is ripple using it? how about IOTA?

ive also read their twitter page that they're redoing their desktop application meaning all the coin supported will be in one app. that's impressive! im hoping for it's release asap.
