I've had the idea for a long time that using a currency to make a killer game would be an amazing boost for bitcoin. As an example, http://www.entropiauniverse.com/ is an MMO style game with a hardcore gambling casino element that rakes in a ton of cash. Bitcoin would make this model far more powerful. I also had an idea back when I first started using bitcoin that a sort of turn based strategy(final fantasy tactics, age of empires DS), mixed with poker style gambling(skill/luck based) and a huge pyramid style ranking system that allows users on the top of the pyramid to gain rake from the players below them, creating an incentive for people to keep playing and moving up. I wanted to design such a game myself but I quickly realized I lack in game design abilities. I think something like this could be a HUGE hit if pulled of well and a massive push for BTC. I also saw a post on Reddit about someone wanting to build a worms style game with the concept of a winnings pot. Anyone working on something like this already? Any other ideas people could share? I feel like there is so much untapped potential here.

Entropia Universe was the first game that came to my mind when I saw this topic. In fact I have tried to make them accept bitcoin as deposit option and they even replied claiming that they where having "developers working on it", but I'm suspecting it may have been some sort of standardized reply since nothing has happened since.
What would be really cool is a clone of entropia (and honestly I prefer the older version of entropia compared to the new one, maybe the old engine/version could be purchased, heh ? ) using BTC as money instead of PED. I wouldn't really want to convert bitcoins into peds (dollars) atm due to the value appreciation of btc, but if there was a game such as entropia where balances was in BTC I would really consider playing that despite not really being much of a gamer.

To be honest, I would rather see that these kinds of implementations would not go online on a large scale in a few years. It would possibly spread a lot of misunderstanding among people, making a lot of them think that Bitcoin is just as WOW-gold. However, when/if Bitcoin reaches mainstream acceptance and people are better educated, then it would be great (and unavoidable?).

I could see the next wow being 100% free and funded by microtransactions.
People could pay people for items with real currency. People could pay to be run through dungeons and such while leveling. guilds could charge admission fees. and a tiny little bit could be taken from each transaction to fund the devs.
I love it.

I know from my personal experience with WOW that this would cause a disaster. You'd get big guilds that would charge to get into their core raiding team, and take non-core players into raids and dump them after locking them to the instance when a "core" player that paid comes in. There are many servers that you already have to essentially pay gold to guild owners to raid in, which is not fun. Having to pay real money would just be dumb.

Whatever. And no you haven’t been in bitcoin since 2010. Plus if you really feel the way you do. Then sell. Have conviction. If not keep pounding sand.

why should a game company adopt bitcoin when they can create their in-game currencies out of thin air?
they might even achieve significant real value.
heck, it might even be a business model. See OpenCoin and XRP (Ripple).

There was already a game like this. It had "dragon" in the name I think. It was like an MMO with little mini gambling areas. You walked around and played a little game and won micro amounts of BTC for it.

There still is a game like this. It had "dragon" in the name I think. It is exactly an MMO "with a hardcore gambling casino element" containing various stakes - from super-micro (ksat) to nosebleed (100's-1000 btc) gambling areas. You walked around and played a variety of games - both vs the house or player vs player and win (or lose) various amounts [depending on the stakes played] of BTC for it.
FTFY http://www.dragons.tl/This mmo/casino isn't for everyone, but some may enjoy it and it has been growing by the day. Levels are attained by completing sets of gambling tasks and the reward for advancing your level comes in the form of increased rakeback %. And it is not uncommon to see people winning big jackpots playing it. In the last few weeks, there have been numerous multi-thousand dollar US jackpots won - both before and after the market "crash." edited for spelling/grammar
