People use it a lot in my country. Sadly, a lot of them also use troll accounts. I guess the only good thing is that they'd have to find some other place to spread their lies. As for the people using it, they knew the risks anyway. My personal account is where my family contact me but I never really post anything personal in it. People these days just seem to share everything on their social media apps (heck, I don't even use IG and Twitter). The people that post photos of every freakin meal they have annoy me the most.

What alternatives would you suggest? I believe I also have a Google+ account just because I use YouTube but I have never really posted anything in it. Is it any better than FB?

Sounds like something pretty dumb for Facebook to do but in all honesty I would make sure to look into more things before you go ahead and believe the_donald sub Reddit. I'm a fire supporter in them and I actually monitor the sub-Reddit daily as I do support President Trump but you must always go ahead and verify your facts (cheeky, hehe)

I think the whole verification of your account is used if you'd like to get into your account when you don't have any access anymore, it's something that's used to protect the account owner from a hacker attempting to impersonate them. As I do think it is a bit much for security's sake I can understand the outrage but I do see Facebooks side in wanting to protect people.

Some people are really good at inventing hyperbolic "news" with things that have been happening for years and no one cares about.  For this kind of group the process is:

-Find something which either supposedly invades your right to privacy, despite being a private website and therefore just being annoying rather than an infringement of your rights, or find something that most people reasonably believe and bash it because of the "government" or something.

-Create a clickbait title which makes money off wrongfully outraged people

-Boom!

Not fake. It's clearly googleable for everyone. However it's been like this for years and it's to get back into locked accounts. You also don't necessarily need government issued ID, just ID of some sort.

Since they probably know how your mind works better than you do, I don't think handing over some ID will make much difference over the way they're already sucking the jizz out of your mind and selling it on.

Yeah Facebook is garbage, I've had a bunch of accounts locked over the last few years, it takes 30 seconds to make a new sock account with tutanota, why would you give them your real identity?

The government can do this for you, and probably already has. This is to cut down on anon troll assholes, and I have no problem with that. When one uses Facebook, you have essentially given away your right to privacy, ESP from state actors, given the nature of the service.
