Hey there, I'm just back to the bitcoin world after being away for a while and have the same issue. However when I try to open a wallet in MultiBit Classic, it's looking for a .wallet file. If I have it try to open the .dat file anyway it says "The error message was "null"".

as far as I know, Multibit HD is using wallet.aes too. I really recommend reading this If you want to upgrade your wallet (which is a wise decision): https://multibit.org/help/hd0.1/how-to-upgrade-from-classic.html

Well my point is that I can't even open the wallet in MultiBit Classic. It's a .dat file and gives me that error when I try.
