A couple have been detained in the United Arab Emirates for having sex outside of marriage.

The South African man and his Ukranian fiancee were reportedly arrested after a doctor in Abu Dhabi who treated Ms Nohai for stomach cramps discovered she was pregnant.

Formal charges have not yet been brought because Ms Nohai is apparently undergoing "further tests" to determine how long she has been sexually active.

In the UAE, all sex outside marriage is illegal, although in Dubai, a blind eye is usually turned to unmarried western couples who co-habit.

Its a middle eastern law and Islam that this habit is prohibited. The are not that so open and visitors and tourist alike should respect their local customs. Hope they can settle the issue and not be deported so that it can't do more mess about their stay.

Even though personally I believe this law is out of the ordinary when people are old enough to make their decisions, they should be left alone but its their law and it must be obey whether by citizens or by outsiders so far you are in that country and they granted you entry subject to their terms and conditions, then its binding on you. For me, I am not even going to come close to a country which their law is restrictive because personal opinion does not really matter...

When you leave in a country you have to abide by their laws no matter how extreme this laws may look to you. In fact there are a lot less divorces in such countries like UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. It is de jure illegal, but unlike countries such as Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, the courts in the United Arab Emirates rarely prosecute anyone for having non-marital sex. But in this case, the woman was detained as she was reported to be pregnant, while remaining unmarried. She should have got an (illegal) abortion. Another option was to travel out of the country.

Sex is a natural need of the body. The people themselves came up with the rules of morality which are not enforceable. Marriage is a procedure that allows you to have your share of property upon divorce and all. Everything else is speculation.

that's the problem with going outside your country you don't have any rights to disobeyed the rules coming from the country that you visited, there's no chance for this couple to contest the law from UAE they need to comply if they will be detain or if whatever rules that will be implemented.

Well, let's just hope they wouldn't be "encouraged" to convert to get off the charges. Yup, I've seen that happen before. And yet we allow them to marry underage girls in non-Muslim countries out of "respect" for their religion. IMHO it would be to the benefit of everyone if anything that's religion-based would be none of the government's problem. Let the religious authorities decide, assuming it should even apply to the people who are being accused. Bigamy for example, should be just tried as a civil rather than criminal case. In my country, only Muslims get away with having multiple wives, the law is applied to most people, even atheists. You can say that you are no longer religious and so on, they'd still arrest you.

There also ban alcohol, religious witnessing, insult prophet Muhammad etc.
We can think, from our viewpoint, that they are to strict or to radical but it's their country, their society and their life.
We should respect it and adopt to such rules, specially if we want to work in such strict Muslim countries.
They are trying to maintain strict order in society, keep strict moral values and rules and who are we to judge them?
I'm sure that their countries will negotiate with UAE and liberate them.

I think I should be allowed to do whatever I want so long as I don't hurt anyone else. How is having sex with my girlfriend hurting you? It's not. On the other hand you not allowing me to have sex with my girlfriend is hurting my relationship. Also hurting my hand. So why would I do what you want?

I think that people who impose their will on others are wrong. Clearly I am right since this behavior has lead to countless wars and suffering of innocent people. Mind your own business.
