I’ve noticed a contrast in the way programmers and non-programmers react when they first hear about Bitcoin. And I think an analogy to cryptography helps explain it.

he's right.

but Bitcoin also employs principles that have been evolving within the field of computer science for years now.  and that is open source software.  linux is probably the quintessential example of this but has spread to many other software projects.  its become generally accepted now that for maximum security a sourcecode needs to be able to be scrutinized by the world at large.

the combination of POW (Byzantine General's Problem), open source software, public key cryptography, and Austrian Economics has created an especially potent brew for fair-minded people. 

these concepts all resonate well to the computer programmer crowd.
