Hi, I am working on my first build and today I connected the USB powered riser for the first time and it shorted out. BIOS no longer sees the fried PCIe slot on the mobo. I tried a second PCIe slot with another riser but the same short occurred. Any idea what could cause this? http://imgur.com/a/iahP1Mobo is Asus Q87M-E Thank you |

Any idea what could cause this? http://imgur.com/a/iahP1Mobo is Asus Q87M-E Thank you turn everything off. unplug psu take a photo of how you hooked up the riser and in what direction you put the burnt piece into the mobo. you have something reversed do this with the psu unplugged an other possibility is the riser has a short. |

make sure you are plugging those risers on the right way into your motherboard   |

OMG...
LOL I put it in the wrong way. I figured if it was 1, it could be the hardware, but 2x its probably me so before start RMA-ing stuff I better figure out what went wrong.
The mobo isn't reading the PCIe slot. Any hope of salvaging the mobo? I read you could scrub it with a toothbrush and WD40 or something. Hopefully the GPU's aren't bricked.

It should have killed the riser and most likely motherboard slot but in all cases I've done it (sadly more than one over tired moment) the GPU was fine. |

I have had cataract surgery in both eyes. I get depth perception issues. So do risers wrong been there done that. In fact death to three mobos six risers and a three hundred dollar gpu since 2011. I have done about a hundred risers in various builds. And about five hundred cards in none riser builds which I prefer. |

I am unsure if I should even try using that riser in the future if I were to use my current PC's mobo in the future to make a 5 GPU rig |

These Risers are cheap. Better get a new one.
Check the direction of the Molex too.
I have lots of Risers, and even when they look identical, sometimes the Molex has to be put in upside down.

I was afraid of that so I specifically ordered the version 7 risers which have the SATA directly on the 16x riser; no nolex adapter at all! The version 7 are the red ones. |

So many minute technical details to mining + the time crunch factor = plenty of potential for mistakes. Sorry to hear you lost a GPU. At least you know how its dead. I have to wait till next week for a new mobo! |

I got kind of the same story...
I shutdown windows, the screen goes black but for some reason the pc doesnt shutdown...I proceed to plug an additional riser when I realize the pcie plug is melting!! Good thing the gpu is fine but the slot is done for. Im wondering if I should RMA the board...
FYI have the same red risers as you (v7).

I also lost a main board to ham fisted attempt to install the socket protector, I mangled the socket pins. It's a hobby, right  |
