Bitcoin is not anonymous at all by default. The address that every transaction is sent to as well as the amount that is sent is 100% public.
Since there is no requirement that a name (or other identifying information) be associated with a bitcoin address, it is possible to maintain anonymity while using bitcoin, but depending on who you are trying to keep the identity hidden from, ensuring such anonymity requires significant effort.
