And how do we know that the GPU have enough power?

For example, say I bought a PSU with 900 watt for 6 AMD 480 GPU.

How do I know that the stuff have enough power? is there a meter I can attach to each GPU to measure how much power each use?

no a 900 watt  is a bit short for 6 cards.

I use a 750 evga p2 for 4 cards..   so 6/4  x 750 = 1125 watt or if you go evga  the 1200 watt p2 or 1300 watt g2

you can use msi afterburner  and gpu-z  both are software they will give you an idea.

and you can use this meter

The technical limit for a rx 480 card is 150 watts , if you are going to overclocking the card to get better hashrate this watts is going to be higher... with proper fine tuning (bios mod , tuning software ) you can lower your gpu power draws ...
so for 6x rx 480 card the max power usage is 900Watts , plus your motherboard , hard drive , cpu , system memory , you going to end up around 1050-1100 watts of power needs with original VGA bios, its mean you must to have a minimum of 1200 watts quality power supply for stable mining performance , but psu with 1500-1600 watts are much better choice Smiley

900watts power supply is not enough for a 6 cards setup , your system going to boot without any problem , you will be able to use internet explorer on that rig and browsing on the internet , but as soon as you starting your mining program , sooner or later you going to run into some trouble

there is no device you can buy to measure the vga cards power draw separately for each cards , but you can buy a few device's to measure your system total power draw from the wall ... great example for this device what philipma1957 posted in his post :

I mine with 6 rx 480 on a 1k PSU , with a 100 vold undervolt, but yeah its better to do it on 1200 or use 5 GPU, or better yet use a 470

If I use 1200 watt PSU and it turns out I don't need 1200 watt. Will I still use 1200 watt power?

No!! that rating is the max power for that psu . You are going to use 1000 watts if your computer using 1000watts plus a few watts.
For example ... A power supply with an efficiency rating of 80 percent provides 80 percent of its rated wattage as power to your system, while losing the other 20 percent as heat. Most power supplies hit their peak efficiency levels with loads in the range of 60 - 80 percent.

so if you get a 1000 watts psu , the ideal system power usage would be 600-800 watts for the best efficiency
if you want a 1000 watts psu to handle a 950 watts system , then you are running that psu close to the max, so the psu efficiency will be lower , its mean your power bill will be higher Smiley

just found a article for you to understand some basic info about psu efficiency  Wink

Tweaked properly a 6x RX480 system could in theory work with a 900 Watt PSU, but that is a weird wattage anyway as most manufacturers go straight from 850 to 1000 watts in their lineups.

I would suggest a name brand Corsair or eVGA 1000 watt unit and tweak your VBIOS and voltages, and with proper miner setup this will put you right around a 800 Watt load, which is right at the 80% sweet spot for PSU utilization.

If you are mining there is no reason to not want to apply these power saving tweaks as even if you did have the mythical "Free Electricity" (the cost is being paid somehow), you do not have unlimited capacity on your electrical system. By tweaking the power draw you could add more rigs before overloading your electrical distribution system.

I think all of us here in the forum ,who have some experience should warn the newbies what can be happening if you are building your system in the wrong way... I would never ever suggest or mention in theory or real life experience to anyone who is building they first 6 cards rigs without any prior experience to use 900 watts psu without bios mods and undervolting those cards. if they do , that can be a real fire hazard and the result can be :

Thats a good point, no major psu maker sells a 900 watt so it is probably a cheap-o.

Beware.

Many years ago I had a off brand in a PC and it blew up and took the computer down.  Mainboard, cpu, gpu, harddrive, ram freaking everything got fried!  So stick to major brands, they will cost more but won't ruin your investment.

If there is one section of your rig where you have to buy quality equipment, it's definitely PSU.
The PSU will be running 24/24 and supply loads of power to your rig, so you'll better buy something that lasts and not a cheap PSU that will end up frying all your components.
With ~900W power consumption, you will need at least 1200W as stated in the previous posts. Idealy your PSU should work at around 60-70% it's ratted wattage.
