What are the things one should look for?

Basically, you only have one thing to determine; how much money you want to flush down the toilet.

Not your keys, not your coins!

Good research is the key point in investing in ICO, you need to good check and double check everything if necessary.
If you are playing blind then it better to send that money to someone or you will lose it.

I don't have stomach for this kind of investments. Probably in this year every ICO will be more or less successful but this was not the case in last two years. If you invest in small projects you can gain more, but i thing it is better to invest in Larger projects (with much money invested in marketing). Return is smaller but you can avoid scam or fraud..

Study and try to know why that coin is going to be released,
Study the ideology of money,
Who are the people behind the creation of that future new currency. Generally, developers of a new currency have already participated in the creation of other currencies,
Access the social networks of these developers and see if their profiles are active,

Anyway, stay informed!

What are the things one should look for?

I highly recommended to make sure the team, the people behind it are legit, also make sure they're not well known scammer or having many coins.

I think it is better to wait and see how the coin behaves once it is in the market instead of investing without knowing what will happen, if the coin skyrockets your earnings will be less but your losses will be less too.

Road map is one of the best thing that you should prioritize when investing on ICO's. If you think that it is something that will give you good profit, it's up to you if you will benefit out of it, maybe for short term or even for longer term. Also look upon who are the people behind it, you may not know that you are just donating your bitcoins there lately when you didn't do your part.

ICO's are risky thing these days and you have to use your brains to choose coin for investment.
You need to consider these things before investing:
How much % from total supply will be sold on ICO;
How professionaly developers are working: announcements, communication, providing of all technical details of coin, developers plans of future after ICO and etc;
You need to check, do this coin are popular, and how many people are interested in it.
But stil, in mostly case, this factor is most important:
Basically, you only have one thing to determine; how much money you want to flush down the toilet.

They hired escrows for the funds. You must look for the roadmap. Some ICO dont have any roadmap to present. And ofcourse you must know the developers. They must present any pictures of the dev team. Just for assurance in case they did something bad. Scams are everywhere. Me, i dont trust ICOs. I just dont like them. I'll just till they released on the market.

At the ICO stage you generally cannot tell much if anything about how the development is going from their github or other code repository (assuming open source) so IMO its a bit more like gambling than investing at the ICO stage.

The dev team is the most important thing about the ICO, not the actual coin. The coin code can be changed, the dev team typically wont be.

Roadmap isn't. I give you an example such as the chrono bank ICO. It looks like too silly to see the price is never above the ico price. The key to investing on the ICO coin is if you know about the first exchange site for that coin. Because in my experience all of the ICO will be dumped on the early stage of the coin.

Another key is on the team, with the experienced team and we are knowing if that was a real person and not an anonymous dev. That will give more guarantee for the investors.

The third point is on his ICO system (fixed rate is not preferable)

It is ok if they have more then one coin as long as they can handle it and the other coins are doing well too.
It doesn't help though if they not committed to the coin. An active Dev is what I look for in any ICO. Professionalism is key.

It's one, base on my observation. As long as the ICO will go success there are exchanges that are willing to list that coin. Knowing people behind it or the team is another factor, as long as they made a good one before for sure many are going to speculate that ICO will be another successful thing for all of them including the investors.

Very good thread in my opinion. Very important thing to me is checking background of the dev team any past succes or involvment in other projects.

Mostly look for something that is truly new and not a copy of a previous successful ICO.

For instance, LISK was a good investment, but after that RISE and DL(i)SK were terrible investments. They basically copy the code and ask for money to run it? Why would one need that if all development can be copied from the first coin?

If it is purely to make a quick buck, look for the ones that are hyped up and don't release on an exchange for several weeks/months after closing. This will cause FOMO from people that missed the ICO and usually a nice price bump in the first days of trading.

seems not only that, to see ico good and reassuring to invest in ico seems you need to see the profile roadmap and the team listed on LinkedIn or not, if the team meraka all listed in LinkedIn means they convince to invest in it, maybe the way I like it was to convince the ICO, that it is really serious in carrying out their projects.
