EU Parliament approves call to free De Lima

MANILA, Philippines – The European Parliament adopted the call of a group of lawmakers to immediately free detained Philippine Senator Leila de Lima, the fiercest critic of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.

In a resolution on Thursday, March 16, the European Parliament said it "calls for the immediate release of Senator Leila M. De Lima, and for her to be provided with adequate security whilst in detention."

European lawmakers also urged Philippine authorities "to ensure a fair trial, recalling the right to the presumption of innocence, to drop all politically motivated charges against her, and to end any further acts of harassment against her."

EU have no  rights to interfere in any government law and justice system.
Even EU is one of the powerful countries in the world they dont have a right.

One does not simply interfere in the politics or government of another sovereign country. At best all they can do is recommend or urge the government to release de lima, they cannot call for another government to do so, even if they did that, it does not matter and it will probably make matters worse.

My thoughts is simple. The Aquino Administration in the Philippines, the Europian Union and Obamas party in America was all controlled by one mastermind. They all have the same strategy destroying their political enemy even if their groups lost in the election. They will use any means including the mass media and will create a scheme and will organize a paid protest to show to the world that their enemy was a bad president. Its not new and people will no longer believe them.

For me its just simply mind your own business. EU Parliament does not have any business to meddle into the politics in Philippines. Why are they doing this? If they don't like what President Duterte is doing in his country, then just shut the hell up. They have their own problems anyways, so better set thing up first in their country before calling out Duterte. Did they hear anything from President Duterte criticizing Brexit? None that I aware of. Maybe ^^Xester is correct, they are doing anything to topple the government of Duterte by all means.

This is just symbolic gesture from EU which has no importance at all.I wonder what the Philippine President to say on this,probably something in his style which will have to be censored on TV.

EU is 10k km from Philippines and they should mind their own business,for example, how to protect their citizens from terrorist or how to preserve the European Union to not fall apart.

EU doesn't have jurisdiction on Philippines obviously. They can't interfere with the Judicial processes as well nor dictate what the Philippine government should do if one of their countrymen is facing criminal charges. Looks like they are pressing the government to release De Lima to trying to influence the outcome of the case. EU don't have jurisdiction on the Philippines court because it is a sovereign state.

Let Malacanan overreact again.  The EU is free to release statements like this, just as Duterte is free to tell them "fuck you!".

IMHO, Malacanan should be more worried of the consequences of railroading the Death Penalty bill. It's quite obvious the Palace had a hand in it. Why else would you think those who voted against it were removed from their positions in Congress? Unfortunate for us, we signed an agreement for removing capital punishment. Reinstating it again would violate that and we'd lose preferred trading status with the EU. Which means our exports to them would be slapped with tariffs. Which would mean they'd become expensive. Which would mean businesses there would just buy from elsewhere.

The Death Penalty itself is problematic. They removed several crimes from it like plunder, making people more suspicious they'd just use it to harass critics.

And again, I really believe treason should be way up there. It's the worst crime anyone can commit. It's a crime not just against any individual but against the State itself.

I am not a big fan of Delima and in fact I never voted for her in the last election but having said that I also don't want anybody to be jailed if the hard evidence do not warrant for the same. In the case of Sen. Delima, I feel that there are some quarters who are really pushing for her incarceration and maybe there are some evidences that are just made up. But if that is the case then it would be easier to Delima to defend herself and if that is the case after some years under detention she can be freed just like what happened to Gloria Arroyo. This can even be history just repeated.

As to the call of EU, we have no choice but to respect their right of expression but of course, the call are just words as they don't have any jurisdiction here. Just like them, we are a sovereign country and we have our own laws to follow and implement. EU may however withdraw some privileges given unto our country and that is within their own prerogatives.

Leila de Lima was arrested for violating the drug trafficking law. Also, this is an internal matter of the Philippines and the European Union should stay the fuck out of it. Will the EU parliament free some drug trafficker in their custody, if the US parliament call for his release?

All statements of European instances, even of European courts on human rights, are no more no less than an advisory character. Therefore, no one will pay attention to the opinion of the European Parliament, although this should be an authoritative statement for them.

It goes both ways. If the Philippine president asks the European MEPs to alter some of their own decisions regarding the internal affairs of the EU, will they agree? If the EU is so concerned, then the MEPs should go through the proper route, i.e through the judicial system.

If the president of your country has enough reasons not to pay attention to the recommendations of European partners, then his beliefs should also be respected, like his opinion of others. All international relations are built on consensus.

It was not the president who arrested De Lima. On the other hand, it was the law enforcement authorities who detained her. And the president doesn't have the right to grant her bail. A bail must be obtained from the appropriate court.
