Basically, is cost of bitcoins generated > cost of power consumption

GPU = 60MH/s for 400w
ASIC = 10 000MH/s for ... 10w

You can't fight the futur.

Bitcoin mining definitely won't be worth it, but altcoin mining might (depending on electricity costs)

No, mining Bitcoin with a graphic card is absolutely not profitable. You better mine altcoins and make some bucks with it than wasting time and money to mine a few satoshis a month.

Basically, is cost of bitcoins generated > cost of power consumption

at the moment for BITCOIN generation:  (which is what OP asked about)
antpool has 630peta hash = 48462 ASICS
and they make 30 blocks a day=375btc a day

1x 13thash asic = 0.00773802btc a day
1thash= 0.00059523btc a day
1ghash= 0.00000059btc a day

based on a few factors a gtx1080 can handle between 800mhash and 1ghash (47sat-59sat a day)
which then deminishes as time goes on due to competition from everyone else and difficulty changes every two weeks

over 2 weeks you may only get about 800sat. which over a fortnight is not even one cent for 2 weeks

 You can use Nicehash which will switch to the most profitable coin but pay only in bitcoin. Here's the calculator, just choose GTX 1080 from the drop-down list.

https://www.nicehash.com/?p=calc

Looks like around a half a bitcoin a year, so $500 right now, might be $5000, you never know.

If you already have one then make sure you have aquedate airflow, if not also make sure your case has enough airflow. I highly suggest getting an open bench setup if you plan on GPU mining as it will result in the best airflow possible, if you must use a case put on as many fans as necessary to keep the GPU cool to lengthen its lifespan. Also make sure to dust it every few months to keep out dust.

with all the gpu combined that are currently mined all the altcoin, which are estimated to be 1M or so, you are looking only for 500-1000TH, that is only 70 antminer s9 at best, while the consumption would be astronomically different...

just to see how much discrepancy there is between asic and gpu, it's really not feasible anymore to mine with gpu not even to be lucky and try to find a block

GTX 1080 was never profitable on Bitcoin mining - it didn't exist soon enough.
 Even with FREE electric you won't earn enough Bitcoin to cover the cost of the card before it dies.

They CAN be profitable on some AltCoins, and even have a fairly high probability of earning enough to both pay for the card and pay for the electric usage OF the card on some altcoins over the course of ballpark a year, if your electric cost is low enough and current profitability level on those altcoins stays close enough to the current level.

Gtx 1080 can do about 400 M/Hash by mining Library coins and can go much higher than that when mining really low difficulty coins or coins who have just show up. You can't mine bitcoin with it but it can make you about 155 dollars per month with energy cost removed so there is net profit with this card 1080 ti 155 dollars per month. Having 2 or 3 of these cards can bring you the same result as having an antminer S9. The cost of such card is damn high though.

mining with those cards, even if its price is ridiculously cheap, the electricity is still a major problem upon mining, plus as you have seen above, the hash power of GPU is far slower than ASICs. unless you are mining the altcoins with algorithms incompatible with notable ASICs and yet GPU itself supports; you are risking the volatile price.

better use your GPU for other purpose instead, like rendering.

out of ability to use the signature, i want a new ban strike policy that will fade the strike after 90~120 days of the ban and not to be traced back, like google | email me for anything urgent, message will possibly not be instantly responded
i am not really active for some reason
