This is an attempt to provide as much information about the situation that I can to successfully resolve the issues and get to mining bitcoin.  Smiley

I am desperately attempting to get away from Windows (my comfort zone) and use linux for this endeavor.  I am by no means knowledgeable in Linux.  So far, I have spent about 20 hours trying to search online for solutions to this issue.  I think I am getting close to figuring out the issue but I am also running out of ideas to try.  I hope that by providing all the below information will give someone enough information to tell me what I am missing.

Not mentioned in this very long support thread is that I tried the new AMD 13.1 drivers (on a clean Xubuntu installation) and I tried the 13 beta drivers as well.  When I used these drivers, I could not mine at all on either card.  The error that I received was that there were no openCL gpu's available.  Below, includes partial successes.

For the full set of the information, I created a .pdf - with logs, screenshots, the kitchen sink.  It's a google doc with commenting turned on.

Blarg, this is my first post... I realize the newbie section is probably not where this belongs and I hope someone will find it and give a girl some help.  Smiley

Thanks
Shannon

Installation Process
To date, I have reinstalled Xubuntu entirely erasing the previous version over ten times now with varying setups to try to get cgminer / bitminter to recognize both cards using OpenCL.  Also, I tried Fedora and Mint Linux w/ Cinnamon and had varying success / failures.

The one constant variable through out all of the installations is that I could get either card to work successfully using bitminter with their appropriate hash rate.  I just could not get both the 7950 AND the 6950 to work at the same time.

For the original installation process, I started with a guide that I found online titled, Complete Guide To Mine Bitcoin on Xubuntu 12.04.

Since one of the cards is a 7xxx series card, I used the driver instructions for the 7xxx series.

These instructions gave me 1 working video card for mining.  Note: It didn't matter if put the 6950 in the first pcie slot on the motherboard or the 7950 - this setup would find each of them, give me the correct information about the card, and allow me to hash in bitminter.  However, bitminter would only find 1 gpu using openCL at a time.

In the beginning of this process, I used sudo amdcccle to open the Catalyst Control Panel, it would only display 1 video card.  Again, depending on what was in the first pcie slot would determine, which that would display.

Then, I checked the xorg.conf file located in /etc/X11.  Originally, in this file, it only displayed one "device" section, which referred to the first pcie slot.  However, I tried a couple times to add the second screen, monitor and device with no success (wouldn't even boot into xfce) - command line.

This is when I installed Mint Linux w/ Cinnamon.  I followed the directions for installing the drivers in the above bitcoin guide and Mint Linux actually worked as a dual monitor setup - displaying information on both screens.  HOWEVER, it also displayed this information repeatedly on 3 virtual desktops.

Again, I could mine using bitminter on ONE gpu - not both.

Here's the xorg.conf file:

After looking at this xorg.conf file, it seemed to have the correct information that I was trying to put into the one on Xubuntu.  I copied this file.  I reinstalled Xubuntu (erasing previous version), installed the updates, followed the bitcoin setup guide above and then added this modified xorg.conf file to the /etc/X11 folder.  Rebooted.  Also, during reboot, there were video errors that scrolled too fast to read the exact info.  So, again partial success / failure.

Here's the Xorg Log:

According to NIST and ECRYPT II, the cryptographic algorithms used in Bitcoin are expected to be strong until at least 2030. (After that, it will not be too difficult to transition to different algorithms.)

Did a little editing on your OP (throwing in code tags to make it easier to read).  I think the logs were too long, because text was being truncated near the end.

Also going to whitelist OP and move this topic, it's less likely to be answered in the newbie section... plus I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 too and am curious.

I want to run 2 graphics cards for mining - I can only get 1 card to work at a time.  Even if I stand on my head - I am having no luck.  I tried to cover all my bases and answer may of the questions that I have seen people ask already on the forums.

I appreciate the help.  I figured it would be too much information for one post which is why I created the pdf for everything.  Also, I didn't want to waste anyone's time by not trying everything I could find to attempt to resolve the problem.

Do you have the same / similar issue?  What graphics cards are you running on your 12.10 Xubuntu?

I only have one card, a 7870 I think, but am not really trying to mine right now.  I'm in a similar situation to you, just switched over to Ubuntu 12.10 after a bad sector on my HD killed the windows install.  Tried a little to get it working, but the card never got detected by cgminer.

For one card - follow this guide's instructions (if you can afford if the pc breaks...)

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Gw7YPYgMgNNU42skibULbJJUx_suP_CpjSEdSi8_z9U/preview?sle=true

For 7xxx series you could try this...

sudo apt-get install fglrx-updates fglrx-amdcccle-updates fglrx-updates-dev
aticonfig --lsa (If correct, will show your video card)
sudo aticonfig --adapter=all --initial (writes to xorg.conf file)
sudo reboot
sudo aticonfig --adapter=all --odgt (Tests configuration - see examples in that guide)

Here's the cgminer stuff to check for it:
    cd cgminer-2.9.5-x86_64-built
    export DISPLAY=:0
    export GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS=1
    ./cgminer -n

The drivers worked for 1 card - just not 2.  Getting ready to post what I think the issue is but want to grab a bit more data to post.

Update: I think I sorted out most of the issues and narrowed down my issue to a --gpu mapping issue.  I have NO idea how to gpu map - if someone can point me to enough information so that I know what to configure for a

Raedeon 7950 tahiti - this is using opencl (according to cgminer)
Raedeon 6950 cayman - this is adl not opencl (according to cgminer)

That would be great.

Here's my procedure:

1.  Installed clean install Xubuntu (Ubuntu 12.10)
2.  Installed software updates for ubuntu (189 updates)
3.  Rebooted
4.  Follow Bitcoin system guide - using 7xxx instructions to install driver, create and verify ati / xorb.conf
5.  Installed Icetea Java (for bitminter)
6.  Setup Catalyst with Ximera tearaway for dual monitor display
7.  Rebooted
8.  Downloaded / ran cgminer according to bitcoin guide

Received the following error:

~/Desktop$ aticonfig --lsa
* 0. 01:00.0 AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series
  1. 02:00.0 AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series
* - Default adapter

:~/Documents/cgminer-3.0.0-x86_64-built$ export DISPLAY=:0
:~/Documents/cgminer-3.0.0-x86_64-built$ export GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS=1
:~/Documents/cgminer-3.0.0-x86_64-built$ ./cgminer -n

[2013-04-22 21:23:26] No known USB devices

When I searched for this error message, I found this on cgminer's website:

3. There are more ADL devices than OpenCL. ADL devices include any ATI GPUs,
including ones that can't mine, like some older R4xxx cards.

To cope with this, the ADVANCED option for --gpu-map is provided with cgminer.
DO NOT USE THIS UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. The default will work the
vast majority of the time unless you know you have a problem already.

To get useful information, start cgminer with just the -n option. You will get
output that looks like this:

[2012-04-25 13:17:34] CL Platform 0 vendor: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
[2012-04-25 13:17:34] CL Platform 0 name: AMD Accelerated Parallel Processing

[2012-04-25 13:17:34] 3 GPU devices max detected

Note the number of devices here match, and the order is the same. If devices 1
and 2 were different between Tahiti and Cayman, you could run cgminer with:
--gpu-map 2:1,1:2
And it would swap the monitoring it received from ADL device 1 and put it to
opencl device 2 and vice versa.

If you have 2 monitors connected to the first device it would look like this:

[2012-04-25 13:17:34] Platform 0 devices: 4
[2012-04-25 13:17:34]   0       Tahiti
[2012-04-25 13:17:34]   1       Tahiti
[2012-04-25 13:17:34]   2       Tahiti
[2012-04-25 13:17:34]   3       Cayman
[2012-04-25 13:17:34] GPU 0 AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series  hardware monitoring enabled
[2012-04-25 13:17:34] GPU 1 AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series  hardware monitoring enabled
[2012-04-25 13:17:34] GPU 2 AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series hardware monitoring enabled

To work around this, you would use:
-d 0 -d 2 -d 3 --gpu-map 2:1,3:2

If you have an older card as well as the rest it would look like this:

[2012-04-25 13:17:34] Platform 0 devices: 3
[2012-04-25 13:17:34]   0       Tahiti
[2012-04-25 13:17:34]   1       Tahiti
[2012-04-25 13:17:34]   2       Cayman
[2012-04-25 13:17:34] GPU 0 AMD Radeon HD 4500 Series  hardware monitoring enabled
[2012-04-25 13:17:34] GPU 1 AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series  hardware monitoring enabled
[2012-04-25 13:17:34] GPU 2 AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series  hardware monitoring enabled
[2012-04-25 13:17:34] GPU 3 AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series hardware monitoring enabled

To work around this you would use:
--gpu-map 0:1,1:2,2:3

Is this enough information for someone to help me figure out gpu mapping - or do you need the xorg.conf (updated version)?

Does the below command give you a temp readout of both cards?  If so, then you have installed your cards correctly -- but for some reason cgminer is not picking them up. I see you are using export DISPLAY=:0  --  make sure you use that before opening cgminer EVERYTIME.

Code:
sudo aticonfig --adapter=all --odgt

Ensure you properly installed both AMD-APP-SDK-v2.8-RC-lnx64.tgz and ADL_SDK_5.0.zip -- you need both before cgminer will work properly
